1,498,449 J. GREER SPRING ATTACHMENT Filed Oct. 15 1923 Patented June 17, 1924.
UNITED STATES JAMES L. GREEK, 0F PAINESVILLE, OHIO.
SPRING- ATTACHMENT.
Application filed October 13, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. GREEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Painesville, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Spring Attachments, of which the following is a full, clear,-
and exact description.
This invention relates to a spring attachment for the choke valve of a carburetor, and has for its object to provide a cheap easily attachable spring attachment to replace the original spring which serves to normally hold the choke valve open. The choke valve spring is usually in the form of a coil spring mounted on the valve spindle and this spring frequently becomes broken. In cars of certain make, particularly Ford cars, it is diflicult to obtain access to this spring for replacement since the spring is mounted within the housing. Inasmuch as it requires skilled labor to dismantle the parts and to replace the spring, the replacement of this spring when it becomes broken is quite expensive.
The present invention provides a spring attachment which is cheap to manufacture, which can be sold at a very low price and which can be quickly put in place by anyone, the spring attachment being fully as effective as the original spring and much less liable to become broken.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing the attachment in place; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the attachment; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the attachment.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the carbureter 1 is shown in Fig. 1 connected to the manifold 2 of the engine and with an air inlet pipe 3. Controlling the air inlet there is a choke valve mounted upon the spindle 6 which has angularly disposed actuating arms 5 and 6 attached thereto. Attached to the eye in the end of the arm 5 is a pull wire 7 extending upwardly to the dash and attached to an eye in the end of the arm 6 is a pull wire 8 extending forwardly to the radiator. The choke valve is normally held in an open position by means of a coil spring not shown within the housin and is closed when the engine is started eit er by operating the pull wire 7 from the dash or by operating the pull wire 8 from the front end of the machine, the dash at- Serial No. 668,286.
tachment being used when starting the engine with the self starter and the radiator attachment being used when the engine is started by cranking. Repeated actuations of the choke valve are liable to break the spring which normally holds the valve open. The present invention is designed to make it unnecessary to dismantle the parts and replace the original spring.
The replacement spring attachment consists of a clip 9 formed from a strip of resilient metal, the body of the clip being bent to cylindrical form to fit over the air inlet pipe 3, the ends of the strip being bent outwardly to provide spaced ears 10 and 11 adapted to receive a bolt 12 which has a screw head and a stem threaded to receive a nut 13. The clip 9 is adapted to be sprung over the pipe 3 and clamped thereto by means of the bolt and nut, the head of the bolt being upon the outer side so that it can be readily tightened with a screw driver.
Rigidly attached to the body of the clipA 9 as is a rearwardly extending arm 14 which an outwardly bent end portion 15 terminating in an eye 16. Attached at one end of the eye 16 is a helical spring 17 formed with a hook 19 at its opposite end which is adapted to hook into the eye of the arm 6. When attached in place as shown in Fig. 1 the spring 17 acting through the arm 6 normally holds the choke valve in open osition but permits the valve to be closed either by means of the pull wire 7 or the pull wire 8. The spring attachment herein described can be very quickly attached to the air pipe 3 and hooked onto the arm 6 of the valve and the spring 17 is fully as effective as the original spring and much more durable.
Having described my invention, I claim: 1. The combination with the choke valve of the carbureter of a Ford car in which the choke valve spindle has angularly disposed arms fixed thereto, said arms having eyes at their outer ends to which are attached pull wires extending to the dash and radiator respectively, of an attachment for replacing the spring of said choke valve comprising a one piece resilient metal clip comprising a strip, the body portion of which is formed to embrace the air pipe adjacent the carbureter and having outwardly extending spaced ears at the ends thereof adapted to be spread apart and sprung over the. pipe and provided with openings to receive a bolt to cause the clip to grip the pipe, an
arm carried by said clip and a helical spring fixed at one end to said arm and provided at its opposite end with a hook adapted to be engaged in the eye of one of said arms.
2. An attachment for replacing the choke valve spring comprising a clip formed from a strip of resilient metal and having a cylindrical body portion adapted to embrace the vertically extending portion of the air pipe and outwardly extending spaced cars at the ends of the strip adapted to be sprung over since-4w JAMES L.
