DRAIN PLUG FOR IRADIATORS.

Be it known that we, Crmnnns Eoknn'r, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and EDWARD H m) Burmncn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, both residents or" Shaunavon, in the Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Drain Plugs for Radiators, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drain plugs for radiators and the like, and the objects of the invention are to provide a simple attachment which may be secured to the water pipe of automobile radiators and thereby do away with the necessity of unscrewing the ordinary drain plug now in general use.
Further objects are to provide simple and effective means for automatically retaining this drain plug in position and at the same time provide means in connection with the atachment for operating it.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists essentially in the example of it described in the present specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
Referring now to the drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure:
Figure 1 is a side view of our improved device attached to the water pipe of an auto mobile radiator,

Figure 4: is a fragmentary sectional detail of a modified form of plug.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A indicates our drain plug attachment as a whole connected to the water pipe extension B which in turn is connected to the radiator C. The water pipe B is of the usual construction extending upwardly from the radiator and it is on this extended portion of the water pipe that our improved drain pipe attachment is secured.

plied. The tli-tfiClllilGllt includes an unthreaded plug adapted, as illustrated in Figure 8, to fit snugly over an opening 10 or, as indicated in the modified form shown in Figure 4, to extend into the opening thereof.
In combination with this improved plug 1 provide the improved means for operating it which entirely eliminates the necessity of screwing and iuiscrewing the plug and which consists essentially of a bracket member 12 adapted to embrace the neck B of the water pipe formed in the radiator and to be clamped thereon by means of a threaded bolt 14 extending therethrough and provided with a securing nut 15. The member 12 is formed with an arm 16 on which is pivotally mounted at 17 a handle member 18 formed at one end with an eye 19 adapted to carry the plug 20 made of ruber or other suitable material, the other end forming a handle portion 21. The arm member 16 is suitably bent and formed substantially midway of its length with the offset 22 through which the pivotal mounting 17 extends. A second and smaller arm or extension 23 is also formed on the member 12 and connecting this with the handle 18 adjacent its lower end is a coil spring 24 whereby, on the handle 18 being actuated and moved off centre, it will automatically snap home carrying the plug 20 into position in engagement with the drain orifice 10, the spring in this position being tensioned to securely and tightly retain the plug in place and prevent leakage.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the pivoting point 18 of the lever 18 is arranged slightly off centre so that in operating the drain plug, it is only necesary to press the handle portion 21 of the member 18 inwardly to the limit of its travel, when the plug 20 will be carried into open position such that the spring 24: lies in a line outside of the pivot point 18 and automatically retained there by the spring 2 1.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of our invention, within the scope of the claim. con structed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What we claim as our invention is:
A drain plug for automobile radiators and the like comprising, in combination, a radiator drainage opening in the water pipe, a bracketmenibe'r provided with an adjustable pipe engaging portion on one side, upper and lower spaced arms formed on the other side of' said bracket a. plug-carrying lever" arm centrally and pivotally mounted on the lower bracket arm, means formed on one end of the lever arm adapted for carrying a plug, a handle formed on the other end of said arm, a plug in the lever arm, and a coil spring connecting the lever arm and the upper bracket arm whereby the plug is normally held in engaging position with the drainageopening in the water pipe.
