TROUSERS PRESS.
Application filed September 27, 1919.
To all whom t may concer/nl.'
Be it known that I, HENRY J. RUCHIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Valley Junction, in the county of Monroe and State ot' lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for creasing trousers, and an object of the invention is to provide a structure of this nature by means of which the trousers may be creased overnight without the use of hot irons, and by which a person may crease his trousers while sleeping.
Another object of this invention is to provide a trouser press as specified, which is adjustable, so that it will crease trousers of various weight or thickness, rendering it adaptable for use in both warm and cold seasons, and also to provide a device particularly adapted for use in connection with trousers having cuffs formed thereon, permit-ting the pressing of the cuff portions of the trousers without distortion thereof or of any adjacent part of the trousers.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation ofthe improved trouser press showing it applied.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Figure l, and
Figure 3 is a section through the cuff engaging portion of the press.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like characters indicate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, the trousers press comprises the sections 10 and 11, which are adapted to engage and longitudinally crease the trousers A, and the sect-ion 12, which is adapted to engage the cuff or lower end portions of the ends of the legs of the trousers A for creasing them, and which also serves as means for suspending the trousers from a suitable hook or analogous support.
The sections 10 and 11 are similar in construction, and each of them comprise a section 13 and 14 which are hingedly connected at their adjacent ends as shown at 15 so as to permit these sections 13 and 14 to be folded to lie in parallel arrangement as illustrated in dot and dash lines in Figure 1 Serial No. 326,748.
of the iilrawings, to permit the press to be folded into a relative compact structure for storage or packing.
Each of the sections 13 and 14 which are similar in construction comprise trouser" engaging strips 16 and 17, which are preterably formed of wood, fiber or any analogous material. These strips 16 and 17 have strips of fabric or any desired type of cloth attached to their inner surfaces for engagement with the trousers A and to prevent the rivet 19 from engaging the trousers. The rivets 19 are carried for attaching the strips 16 and 17 to the clamp structures 20, which are spaced at longitudinally spaced distances along` the length of the strips 16 and 1T, the clamps upon section 14 being staggered disposed with respect to the clamps upon the section 13, in order to not provide obstructions when the sections are folded together upon hinges 15.
The clamp structures 20 comprises substantially U-shaped bodies 21, the legs 23 of which are attached to the strips 1T by means of the rivets 19, while the legs 22 thereof adjustably carry thumb screws 24. The thumb screws are attached by means of plates 25, and rivets 19 to the plate 16 to permit the adjustment of the plate 16 relative to the body 21 of the clamps 20, and also relative to the strips 17 for securely pressing` the trouser legs therebetween, irrespective of the thickness of the fabric of which the trousers are made to press or crease the trousers. The structure 12 which serves the dual function of means for creasing the cuff or lower edge of the trousers and also as a hanger of the trousers, comprises a substantially U-shaped saddle 26, the leg 27 of whichrhas a strip 28 attached thereto by means of rivets 29. This strip 28 has a strip or layer of fabric 30 at its inner surface vtired in any suitable manner, preferably by gluing so as to prevent contact of. the rivets 29 with. the trousers A. The leg 31 of the body 26 adjustably carries a thumb screw 32, the inner end of which is attached, by means of a plate 33 to a strip 34, which lies parallel to strip 23 and is of the same size as the latter strip. This strip 35 has a strip 35 of fabric attached to its inner surface, facing the fabric strip 30 to prevent engagement of the rivet 36 with the trousers, which latter rivets are employed for attaching the plate 33 to the strip 34.
The body 26, oit the clamp structure has a hook 37 swivlelly carried thereby, which serves as a hanger for engagement with a clothes hook or suitable support to permit the trousers A to be supported or suspended, when the ereaser or press is applied thereto. The sections 13 and 14 are ot such length that when extended end to end, as shown in solid lines in `Figure l ot the drawings, they will engage the major portion ot the edges of the trouser legs, leaving the lower ends thereof tree, they being particularly adapted for use in trousers which` have cull's 'formed upon their lower ends. However, it is to he understood that in ease no cuits are provided on the trousers, they may be mov-ed until they engage the trouser legs to the lower end thereof. However, in case the trouser legs have oue upon .their lower ends or in ease it is desired to support the trousers from a clothes hook or analogous support, the sect-ion l2 of the presser is applied, by adjustment ot the thumb sor-ew 32, to the cuff of the trouser to securely press it, and to prevent distortion ol' any portion of the trouser legs, and also to permit of the proper creasing of the culi' portion. By adjustment of the thumb screw 34, the strips 1,6 and 17 may be brought into secure clamping and creasing engagement with trouser legs olf any thickness within the limits ot movement et the strip lG relative to the strip 17, there- `by rendering the trouser press particularly adaptable Yfor use in all seasons.
Changes in details may be made without departing 'from the spirit of this invention, but;
lt claim: l
A press comprising sections extending lnugitudinally ot each other in end to end relation and each having clothes engaging strips positioned in superimposed relation, a hinge tornied oit pivotally connected leaves secured the outer edO'e #faces ot adjacent end portions et corresponding strips of said sections, til-shaped yolres straddling said sections and each having a lower arm secured to the under tace ot a lower strip and an upper arm extending above an upper strip ai' d provided with a threaded opening, and a threaded stem in the threaded opening having` its inner end in swiveled connection with the upper tace ot the upper strip and moving the upper strip `relative to the lower strip when rotated in the threaded opening, the yolres o'l one section being positioned to extend in overlapping relation to the yokes oi the other section when the sections are Yfolded to extend in substantially parallel side by side relation to each other.
