Description

R. A. WEISS.

Patented Apri\14,1874.
Washing- UNI'IED PATENT OFFICE REUBEN A. WEISS, OF OENTREPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHlNG-MACHINES.
Specification forming paru 0f Letters Patent N0. 149,817, da'ced April 14, 1874; application filed Janua-1y 24, 1874.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known filmt I, REUIBEN A. WEISS, of Oentreport, Berks county, Stae of Pennsylvania, have inve nted an Improvement in Washin g-Maehines, of Whieh alle following is a specificaoionz' Myinvention relates 1:0 that dass of washingmachines in which the elothesare kneaded by am]. between a fixed nonwve rubbing-bed Within a vesse1, zmd a vibratin 1ubbt2r; an d the nmin object 0f n1y invention is to facilitate the operati on of washing-m aehines of this dass, und the introducoion and re1no va] 0f th e clothes, b y suspendin g the vibmting rubber A fro1n the nnder side 0f che hinged lid I) 0f the vessel and exposes t he Whole 0f the same when opened, a-s shown in Iig. 1. 'Ihe rock-shaft B is adapted 130 bearings z 0n the under side 0f the lid, in such a position thao when ehe labt-er.
is elosed 1111e said shaft sha1l be concentric wioh the rubbing-bed.
' In the 'presenn instanee, the shaft has a- Single operating-handle, j; but ib rnay be continued enoirely across the 1id, und provided With handles at both ends.
An arm,.b, projects from the sha-ft into a tubular projeetion, a, on the rubbing-bed, and is retained therein by a pin, k, adapted to a longitudinal s1ot in said proj eetion, 01' by other equivalent means. A spring, d, is contained within the tubular projeetion, and bems con stantly against the end of the arm b, thus forcing the rubber against the fixed rubbing-bed With a yielding pressure, whieh renders the said rubber self-acoommodating t0 the thickness of the mass 0f clothes 0ve.r whieh it is' ezmsed to pass when oscillated.
I 112we found that, by placing the spring in this position, bettet results are obtained thau by thu usua1 p1an 0f rendering the rock-shaft yielding in its bearings.
The rubber, being suspended from the lid of the machine, is lift-ed clear 0f the bed when ever said 1id is opened, as shown in Fig. 1,
free access being thus obtained to the interior of the machine, for the purpose of introdueing 01 1emoving the clothes.
I c1aim as my invention- The combination, with the hinged li l D am] rock-shafn B, 0t the rubber A, sleeve a, and spring d, as .and f0r the purpose set f0rth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speoification in the presenee of two subscribing witnesses.
R. A. WEISS. Vitnesses WM. B. SGHOEN'ER, J. DALLAS SCHOENER.
