PETER B. WATSON, OE BELVIDERE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO FREDERICK SEIDLE, OF MEOHANIOSBURG, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN VEHlCLE-HUBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,814, dated April 14, 1874; application filed February 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER B. WATsoN, of Belvidere, in the county of Warren and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wheel-Hubs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representa tion of a longitudinal sectional View of. my wheel-hub. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
This invention has relation to a novel construction of combined wood and metal hubs for vehicles, for the purpose of firmly securing the tenons of the spokes into them. The nature of my invention consists in a metal 001- lar for application 011 awooden hub, which collar is constructed with dovetail mortises and splitting-wedges, whereby the tenons are spread out in the act of driving them into the said collar. It also consists in the combination with such a collar of a wooden hub having annular grooves formed in it to receive the spread ends of the spokes, as will be hereinafter explained. I
The following is a description of my invention:
In the annexed drawings, A designates a wooden hub, and B the metallic collar driven thereon, so as to firmly wedge itself in place.
- The hub A has two annular grooves, a a, formed in its periphery, for receiving the ends of the tenons on the spokes O, which grooves slope outwardly from an intermediate rib or partition, I). The metal collar B,whichis cast entire, has mortises 0 formed in it, which are separate from each other by means of radial wedgeshaped divisions d, arranged in line with the longitudinal axis of the hub. These divisions taper toward the center of the hub. The sides of these mortises diverge inwardly, and are in planes with the outer sides of the two grooves a a, as shown in Fig. 1.
My object is to split the tenons in the act of driving them into the hub-n1ortises, and to spread out the split ends 0 c therein, during the act of driving these tenons into the hnb. This I accomplish by means of wedges 9 cast between the inclined sides of the mortises, as shown in Fig. '1, the sides of which wedges are in planes corresponding to the outer sides of the annular rib or partition I) of the wooden portion of thehub. These intermediate wedges y will spread out the split ends of the tenons, and form a rigid connection of each spoke to its hub.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A metal collar, having wedges 9 attached thereto, whereby the tenons are spread out in the act of driving them into the said collar, substantially as specified.
2. The grooves a a, inclined and formed in the wooden portion A of the hub, and thewedges g in collar B, in combination with ten-,
oned spokes, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
PETER B. WATSON.
