iinn tarn DAVIED OORSON POYNTER, OF MOUNT VERNON, KENTUCKY.
VEHICLE-secas.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 655,733, dated August 14, 1900..
Appncaaon flied January zo, 1900. senti No. 2,140. fr@ motti.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, DAvIED Consort Porn'- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, inthe county of Rock Oastle and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle Wheels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,'clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in vehicle-Wheels.
It has for its objects more particularly to facilitate the construction of the Wheel and the assembling of the parts, to strengthen and render the same durable, and otherwise promote simplicity and lessen the cost of manufacture.
It consists, primarily, of the construction of the felly portion of the Wheel, the same comprising a series of spoke-receiving sockets or iron sections, also adapted to receive the ends of and unite wooden telly-sections, and of certain detailed features of construction, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and specifically pointed out in the claims.
It Will be understood that latitude is alloWed herein as to details, as they may be changed or varied according to circumstances Without departing from the spirit of my invention and the same yet remain intact and be protected.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a broken vertical section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the spoke and felly receiving sockets or iron sections.
In carrying out my invention I construct the Wheel l ofthe usual hub 2, spokes 3,and tire 4t, but constitute the felly portion of a series of Wooden sections 5 and a series of sockets or iron sections 6. The iron sections orsockets 6 are each formed With a central relatively-solid portion C, havinga hole or socket 7 to receive a tenon on the outer end of each spoke. Said iron sections or sockets are each provided with angular seats or sockets S, one
in each end, adapted to receive the ends of 5o the Wooden folly-sections 5. The latter sections are secured in said seats by suitable fastenings inserted through openings in the inner or under side of said iron sections and entering said Wooden folly-sections. Said Wooden felly-'seotions are provided with tenons at their ends iitting into the seats 8 of said iron sections, thus being arranged flush With each other at their sides and the said seats preferably elongated toward the inner side of the Wheel.
From this construction it Will be seen that the tfelly portion of the wheel is constructed substantially of a series of Wooden sections and a series of iron sections, alternating each other, and that said iron sections serve as sockets for both the spokes and Wooden telly-sections. Thus the parts are all readily put together or assembled, and any one of the spokes or folly-sections requiring renewal equally readily replaced by another spoke or folly-section, respectively.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A vehicle-Wheel having a felly portion comprising a series of iron sections, each composed of a central relatively-solid portion provided With a socket to receive a spoketenon, and angular elongated seats for the felly-sections, substantially as specified.
2. A vehicle-Wheel having a felly portion comprising a series of `iron sections, each composed of a central relatively-solid portion provided with a socket to receive a spoketenon, and angular elongated seats having openings to receive fastenings for the Wooden folly-sections, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
DAVIED OORSON POYNTER.
