UNITED STATES MARSHALL TURLEY, or COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
IM PROVEMENT IN FELLIE S FOR CARRIAGE-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,750, dated February 13, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARSHALL TURLEY, of Council Bluffs,in the county of Pottawattomie and in the State of Iowa, have invented cerforth.
In order to .enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section; Fig. 2, a plan view; and Fig. 3 end views of my felly.
A represents the felly, made in the shape of a segment of a circle, of cast-iron, or pressed into shape, of wrought-iron. The felly is hollow or concave, and tapered on both sides toward the center, so that it will run through mud or sand with ease. At one end of the I felly is a projection, a, and at the other end is a corresponding groove, 1), so that the fellies may be joined together closely. At suitable intervals on the angle of the felly are boxes or projections d (1, for the insertion of the spokes B B, which pass into wooden blocks 0 G on the inside of the felly. The end of the spoke being split, a wedge, e, is driven in, which fastens the spoke securely in place.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The cast or wrought iron felly A, made hollow, with tapering sides, and provided with projection a, groove 12, and boxes 01 d, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In combination with the cast or wrought iron felly A, constructed as described, I claim the spokes B B, wooden blocks 0 O, and Wedges e c, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of November, 1871.
MARSHALL TURLEY.
