Description

JOHN SWAN, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPORTSVIEINS POCKET-KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent Not 149366, dated 'April 14, 1874; application filed March 19, 1874.
To all 20h-0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SWAN, of Baltimore, in the State 0f Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sportsmens Implements, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication.
My invention consists in a sportm ans knife, having a round handle, with one solid smooth end, to forma cartridge-loader, hinged arms, provided with notched jaws, to form a cartridge-crimper and cartridge-extractor, anda sliding pinto form a' cap-extractor, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and' operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my pocketknife, and Fig. 2 is a side view of tle sa-me, showing it in the position of loadin g and crimping cartridges, and also in position for extracting cartridges.
A represents the knife-handle, made round in form, and one end, a, solid and straight, to form a convenient loader for cartridges. The outside diameter of the handle A should be such that the knife will easily pass into any of the paper cartridge-shells now generally used by Sportsmen, whatever the caliber may be. The handle A contains one or more knifeblades, B, screw-driver C, cork screw D, and
tweezers E, arranged in any desired manner.
A to be used as a loader, they are closed on the outside of the cartridge-shell and the jaws G pressed against the shell, and the whole implement turned around. This crimps the shell immediately above the wad forced in by the loader, to prevent the same from coming out. On the outside of each jaw G is anotch, a', so that the arms can be thrown over, as
shown in Fig. 2, and used as a cartridge-eXeem tractor by the notches x tting over the flange of the cartridge-head. The inner sides of the arms G G are rouglxenedto form tilesurfaces. y
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A sportsmans pocket-knife, formed with a round handle, it having a-solid smooth end, a, to form a cartridge-loader, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The hinged shellcrimping arms G G provided with jaws G Gf, in combination with the round-handled knife A, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. l
3. The notches x formed in the back of the jaws G', forming a cartridge-extractor, for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The cap-extracting sliding pin b, in. combination with a round-handled knife, substantiallyas for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, this 12th day of y OFFICE.'
