Description

A. PARKS CARPENTER "s PLANE Filed April 25, .119?3 fnlvllllU Patented June 17, 1924.
PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO PARKS, OJF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
CARPENTER S PLANE.
Application led April 25, 1923. Serial No. 634,581.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALONZO PARKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usefull Improvements in Carpenters Planes, of which the following is a specifica-V tion.
This invention relates to carpenters planes, and hasfor its object to provide an improved construction by means of which 'planes of different kinds may be mounted in the `same stock or face plate, and bits of different kinds used accordingly suitable to the work at hand. By these means the Weight of a number of different planes can be reduced since the stock, which is the heaviest part of a plane, can be used with dilferent bits or throat pieces.
The invention will be understood from the following description andy the accompanying drawings iu which Fig. 1 is a section of the plane. Fig. 2 is a section of the stock detached. Fig. 3 is the top of Fig. 2. Fig. 42 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
The plane block or stock is indicated at 6, and it may be made of metal if desired. It has a recess 7 at about the middle thereof, to receive the other parts of the bit, this recess having side walls 8 to form a boX or cavity and prevent lateral movement. The face plate 9 forms the bottom of the cavity and has a throat 10, in front of which the block is undercut as indicated at 11 to receive a lip 12 on the front of a casing 13 which carries the throat piece 14k and bit 15, clamped to the throat piece in any suitable manne-r; and the bottom 16 of the casing carries the main handle 17, the front 1S of the casing fitting against the front wall of the recess 7 with the lip 12 in the groove 11. The rear end of the casing is held in place by any suitable latch. I place a spring latch 21 the bolt of which engages in a hole 22 in the rear part of the stock. The side edges of the casing `overlap the edges kof the Walls 8.
By releasing the catch 21, the bit casing can be tilted up until the lip 12 can be withdrawn, and the Whole casing can then be removed from the recess 7. Accordingly, a different bit casing can be put in place, and so the same stock o'r face plate can be used for a variety of bits, it being only necessary to take out one casing and insert another, as the nature of work may require. Or, a stock off/different face plates can be made and applied to the same bit casing, permitting a variety of uses without the weight of a considerable number of complete planes.
I claim: y
1. A plane comprising a stock having a recess and a throat in the bottom of the recess, and a bit casing fitting in the recess and removable as a unit therefrom and having a lip tting in the throat, and means to hold the casing in the recess.
2. A plane comprising a. stock having a recess and a throat in the bottom of the recess, and a bit casing fitting in the recess and removable as a unit therefrom and having a lip fitting in the front, and means to hold the casing` in the recess, the front wall of the recess being undercut at the throat to receive a lip of the casing.
3. A plane comprising a stock lia-ving a recess and a throat in the bottom of the recess, and a bit casing fitting in the recess ALONZO PARKS. Witnesses:
