Description

May 20-, 1924- G. A..LANDI$ SAFETY DEVICE FORACUFF BUTTONS 7 Filed May 15,
' gwuwm'oz 6'. OiLandaa Patented May 20, 1924.
PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. LANDIS, OF HOQUIAM, WASHINGTON.
Application filed May 15, 1923.
To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. LANDIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoquiam, in the county of Grays Harbor and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Cuff Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of the present invention is to prevent the detachment and loss of cuff buttons. Articles of personal wear of the nature of cuff buttons frequently become detached from the wearing apparel and are lost and it is the purpose of the present invention to provide simple and effective means to guard against such detachment.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrative of the invention,
Figure 2 is a detail view of the device,
Figure 3 is an elevation of one of the clips the ends of the members being disengaged,
Figure 4 is an edge View thereof, and
Figure 5 an end view.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The safety device comprises a pair of clips and an intermediate connection. This is best shown in Figure 2 wherein 1 designates the connection which may be of any construction and is shown as comprising a short len th of chain. The clips coupledby means of t e connection 1 are of like forma- SAFETY DEVICE FOR CUFF BUTTONS.

tion, each consisting of a length of spring wire of suitable gage and bent to provide an eye 2, terminal hooks 3 and intermediate oppositely curved portions 41-. The terminal hooks 3 are oppositely inclined and their extremities overlap. The length of wire forming the clip is doubled upon itself and the end portions crossed, forming the eye 2, and oppositely bowed, as indicated at 4, with the terminal portions crossing and recurved to form the hooks 3 which overlap and form an eye similar to the eye 2. The tendency of the terminal hooks 3 is to spring outwardly in opposite directions, hence when said hooks are pressed inwardly and engage they maintain the predetermined position and are not liable to become disengaged. To release the hooks 3 it is necessary to press thesame inwardly until the extremities clear each other, after which a lateral pressure" is required to be exerted to throw one book clear of the other so that when the releasing pressure is relieved, the hooks 3 assume the position substantially as shown in Figure 3. Engagement and disengagement of the hooks 3 is effected by inward pressure upon the outwardly curved or bowed side members 4 of the clips.
In practice, the clips are connected by the part 1 engaging the eye 2 and one of the clips is engaged with the shank of the cuff button near the head and the other clip is engaged with the opposite end of the shank,
as indicated most .clearly in Figure 1. The connection 1 passes around the ends of the cuff, the same being confined between the cuff button which passes through the buttonholes of the cuff and the chain 1 or like part.
What is claimed is: A safety device for out]? buttons, the same comprising a pair of clips and an intermediate connection, each of the clips comprising an eye and overlapping terminal hooks, and intermediate outwardly curved portions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A. LAN'DIS. Witnesses:
