Be it known vthat I, HERMAN BIEDER, a citizen of the Unitedy States, resident. of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and` State of Chio, have invented newand usefullmprovements in Lamp Holders, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the inventionlbeing herein explained and the best mode in which I have 'contemplated applying that Aprinciple,yso as to distinguish it Jfrom other Iinventions. l
My invention .relates yto lamp kholders and particularlyto fa device of `this character-de. signed ifor-holding electric :lamp bulbs, on eX- t-ension cords. 'It is the object of my inven tion to rovide a holder of this charactercapable ofbeing quickly attached to anyavailable supportwhereby thelight may bereadilyplaced inthe positionmost convenient for the usen A furtheiwobjectis to provide a holder ofthischaracter which can be economically manufactured, which is :neat in appearance, and which is :offdurable con` struction. Other objects `will be apparent from the following description together with the annexed drawings.
Thepresent application is a continuation in part i of my ,prior .copending application Serial No. 318,736, filed Aug.f30, l1919.

The clamping portion of the holder comprises a ,pair of sheet metal body members .4 land 5, provided with inturned lugs `6 which receive a `pintle 7 by means of whichthemembers 4 and 5 are hingedly connected,said ihody .members havingcla-mping jaw portions -8 .and 9projecting forwardly fromthehinge connection and actuatingarm Vportions 10 and 11y extending rearwardly from vthe hinge connections and angularly disposed -with respect to the clamping jaw portions; together with wire loop extensions 12 and 13 secured to lthe clamping jaw portions; Mounted onthe pintle 7 is acoil spring 14 the opposite ends of which bear uponthe arm portions 10 and `11 of ytheclamping members, `and normally hold the jaws in closed position and the actuating armslin kextended positionfas shown inFigs. klfand 2.
The jaw portions 8 Aand 9 are provided at the edges thereof at their outerends with rolled over edges -formingsockets 15 which receivethe ends ofthe U .shaped wire clamp extensions 12and 13. Theextensions 12 and '13 are bentlin opposite directions adjacent `theloody portions 8 'andy 9 and the extension '12 is narrower and shorter `than the l:extension 13 so as to be freely movable within 4The clamping `jaw .portions Sand 9 of the body members arevprovided adjacent the lips 6 with inner registering grooves 16 adapted to receivethey eX- tension cord 3 when it isdesired `to hang the holderon the extension cord. `The wire extension ` members 12 and 13 have `square outer end portions which are bent inwardly l as indicated at 17 in Fig. 9 whereby a four point contact is provided in clamping to flat objects such as shown in Fig. 3. For reinforcing the sheet metal body members 4 and 5 at the bend over the hinge, longi tudinally disposed ribs 18 extending across the bend are stamped in the body of the plates. The marginal edges of the arm portions and 11 are reinforced by rolled over beads 19.
The arm 10 is provided with a keyhole slot 20.` Secured to the arm 10 is a cup shaped socket retaining member 21. The member 21 has a central opening in the bottom surrounded by a marginal flange 22 fitting within the enlarged portion of the keyhole slot and turned over against the inner face of the plate to secure the retaining memberfin place on the arm. The cup 21 has a slot 23 registering with the slot 2O of the arm to permit the extension cord 3 to freely enter the cup when the socket 2 is inserted therein. The cup member 21 is constructed of resilient metal and is provided with slots 24 extending downwardly from the upper edge to permit the walls of the cup to spring outwardly sufficiently to permit the socket 2 to be pressed into the cup. The outer edge of the cup 21 has an inturned retaining flange 25 adapted to spring over the outer edge of the peripheral ribs 26 on the socket 2. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the switch button27 of the socket 2 is clear of the cup 21 so that the socket can be freely rotated therein. This is advantageous in that lthe switch .button is always readily accessible and where a shade or reiector is used with the bulb the light can be directed in the desired direction.
The arm 11 is provided with a keyhole slot 28 corresponding exactly to the slot 2O inthe arm 10. Rotatably iitting in the enlarged portion of the keyhole slot 28 is an eyelet ring 29 which has a cut away portion adapted to register with the narrow entrance portion of the slot as shown in Fig. 4.' By rotating the ring 29 the enlarged portion of the slot 2S can be closed to retain the cord 3 therein as indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 4 and 8. By reason of this arrangement the cord cannot interfere with the operation of the clamp, the cord is not bent adjacent the socket on operation of the clamp and consequently there is no danger of breaking the wires in the cord at this point.
As shown in Fig-s. 4 and 6 the arms 10 and 11 and the wire extension 13 have wide square ends and are adapted to serve as supporting legs for the holder as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The extensions 12 and 13 are adapted to firmly engage any relatively flat object and the jaw portions Sand 9 together with the extensions 12 and 13 are adapted to clamp a bar, pipe, rod or the like.
In Figs. 10 and 11 l have shown an attachment by lmeans of which small light sockets such as used in automobiles may be secured in the retaining cup 21. The small socket 30 is held in place in the cup 21 by means of a cap 31 which is provided with a central aperture to receive the end of the socket 30 and a cylindrical flange 32 adapted to be slipped over the slotted cylindrical wall of the cup 21. The spring pressure of the wall portions of the cup 21 between the slots 24 serves to frictionally hold the retaining cap 31 in position.
What l claim is:
1. A lamp holder ofthe character described, comprising a pair of pivotally connected sheet metal body members formed to provide forwardly extending clamping jaws and rearwardly extending actuating arms, said arms comprising flat plates angularly disposed with respect to said clamping jaws; and a llamp socket supporting member carried by one of said plates, both of said plates being slotted from their outer ends to receive the lamp cord. i
2. A lamp holder of the character dei scribed, comprising a pair of pivotally connected sheet metal body members formed to provide forwardly extending clamping jaws and rearwardly extending actuating arms, said arms comprising flat plates angularly disposed with respect to said clamping jaws; a spring for normally holding said clamping jaws in closed position; anda lamp socket receiving member mounted upon the outside of one of said plates said member being slotted to receive the lamp cord, said plate upon which said member is mounted having a slot leading from the end thereof to the slot in said receiving member and the other plate having a cord receiving slot in alinement with the slot in said irst mentioned plate.
3. A lamp holder of the character described, comprising a pair of pivotally connected sheet metal body members formed to provide a pair of forwardly extending clamping jaws andv rearwardly extending actuating arms; a spring for normally holding said jaws in clamping position; a lamp socket retaining member secured to one of said arms, said arm and said retaining member being slotted to receive the lamp cord, and the other arm being provided with a corresponding cord receiving slot; and means carried by the last mentioned arm for retaining said cord in the slot.

Av lamp holder of the character described, comprising a pair of body members each formed with a forwardly projecting clamping portion and a rearwardly projecting actuating arm portion angularly disposed with'respect to said clamping portion; 4 a hinge connection between said body members adjacent the angles between said jaw and arm portions; a spring for normally holding said jaws in closed position and said arms in extended position; and a lamp retaining member mounted on one of said arms; said arms being relatively wide at their outer ends and of equal length at their outer edges whereby said arms are adapted to form supporting legs for said holder.
5. A lamp holder comprising, a pair of pivoted members formed to provide clamping jaws on one side of the pivot and actuating arms on the opposite side of said pivot, said clamping jaws having end portions bent in opposite directions, one of said end portions having an opening through which the end portion of the other jaw passes, said arms beingangularly disposed with respect to said clamping jaws; a spring for normally holding said jaws in closed position and said y said holder.
6. A lamp holder comprising a clamp, a lamp socket retaining cup carried by said clamp, and a lamp socket retaining cap adapted to detachably fit over the open outer end of said cup and having a central aperture adapted to rreceive the outer end of the lamp socket.`
