T0 all whom t may concern.' I y l Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BELL, a citizen of the United' States, residing at Chicago, in the' county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement 'in Protecting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in protecting devices, andmore especially to a protecting device especially adapted for use in connection with vault doors, Safe doorsl and the like, to protect the sameagainstunauthorized opening or breaking. My vinvention will be fully understood by reference'to the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which I have shown a form of device embodying the features ofvmy invention. V I

Mounted within the casing' 22, at about the center, is a plate 26 provided with a tongiie27 lextending into the slot 25. Mounted in the casing 22gand adapted for endwise sliding movement therein is a bolt 29, having its end lying towardthe jambenlarged, and its other end made smaller in diameter, yas indicated by 29a. The enlarged end of the bolt 29 extends through the slot 25 in the end face v22a ofthe casing 22, and itsvother' end projects through a hole 30 in fthe' opposite end face of the casing 22. The

In general, it might be stated that there is mounted on the jamb 21 a socket member provided with a hole or socket 50, adapted to accommodate the enlarged end of the bolt 29. Locking means are also provided for preventing withdrawal of the bolt. This socket member comprises a block 51 suitably mounted on the jamb 21, by means of machine screws 52, the heads y53 of which are located within suitable recesses 54 and engaged by the shoulders 35a. The block 51, on its face adjacent the end of the casing 22, is provided with an in-set plate 61 held in position by the screws 62. /Vhen this plate 61 is in place,- the heads 53 of the machine screws 52 are rml gripped, thus holding the block 51 andiplate 61 rmly in position on the jamb 21. When the vault door is closed, the heads of the screws 62 are covered by the end 22a of the casing 22. The socket or hole 50 extends through the plate 61 and into the block 51 and is adapted to receive the end of the bolt 29 when the vault door is closed. In operation, the bolt 29 is slid to the right (as viewed in Fig. 2) to the position indicated y The vdoor is then closed, and the bolt is then slid to the left, so that its end enters the socket 50. When A in this position, it is obvious that, if the vault door be opened, the end of the bolt 29 will be held stationary while the door is moved outwardly, thus causing relative movement of the bolt 29 toward the door, to slide the plate 35, to move the ends of the tubes 39 land break the same over the forward edge of the plate 26, as rdescribed above.
The following vmeans are provided for locking the bolt 29 within the socket 50 to prevent unauthorized removal of the same therefrom.v Mounted on the face of the plate 61, adjacent the block 51, is a vertically slidalble bolt 80.l with its lower end fo-rked as' indicated by 81 and adapted to engage with the groove 32 lin the bolt 29.
The bolt is adapted for upward or downward sliding movement, and any suitable locking means, as indicated in general by 83, are provided for locking the same in its lo-wermost position. The locking means 83 are adapted to be controlled by a key 8 5, and a projection 86 is provided on the upper surface ofthe easing 22 opposite the lock 83 (when the door is closed), in order to prevent or obstruct Ythe use of va drill or other toolfagainst the lock 83, for the purpose of unauthorized tampering. In operation, the bolt 29'is slid into the socket 5 0 after the door is closed, and the bolt 80 is then turned to its lowermost 'position and locked by means of the key 85, thus bringingthe forked end 8l of the bolt 80 into'engagement with the :groove 32, thus preventing the bolt 29 from being slid out of the hole 50.`
Suitable means lare provided for showing whether the device is locked or set. Slidabl'y mounted on the smaller end of the casing 22 is a plate 90, provided with a rectangular opening 91. This plate is bent around over the end of the casing and provided with a hole through which the rod 29a passes. The knob 31 is attached to this part of the plate in any suitable manner; so that sliding movement of the bolt serves to slide ythe plate 90. When the bolt 29 is in the socket 50, the opening 91 in the plate 90 registers with and discloses a red rectangle 93 on the front of the casing 22. When the bolt is pulled out of the hole 50 to the position `indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, this red patch 93 is covered. Therefore, when red shows the bolt is in place, or the device is locked or set.
Within the casing 22, in front of the tubes 39, are provided strips 100 of hardened metal to prevent and hinder tampering or' cutting. Likewise hardened metal 101 surrounds the hole 50. Similarly hardened metal 102 is placed in the projection 86.
`The enl-arged part 29 of the bolt is hollowed,
as indicated by 104 (see Fig. 7). This hollow part may be filled with any suitable explosive, so that any tampering with the bolt or cutting of thev same will cause an explosion which will break the tubes 39.
It will be noted from the foregoing description that the principal object is to breaky the glass tubes 39 and empty the contents therefrom. These glass tubes are adapted to contain liquids, which sing-ly, or
upon mixing, give off poisonous or irritating gases or fumes which will cause any one tampering with the vault to leave the vicinity. Any suitable liquid or liquids may rbe used in these tubes. For example, one 'tube may contain chloropicrin, another tube stannic chlorid, and the thirdtube ammonium hydroxid 'saturated with ammonium chlorid and when these three liquids mix, heat is generated which vapo-rizes the chloropicrin and causes it to give ofi' irritating vaporsl and fumes. The chloropicrin alone, upon being released from the tube, will vaporize and give olf noxious and irritating gases and fumes.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.

What I claim as new and .desire to secure 1. In combination with a door and jamb, mounted part and projecting from the casing a casing on the door, a plurality of separate frangible tubes within the casing each containing a noxious gas producing liquid, "a part movably mounted within the casing and adapted to bear against the rangible tubes, and a rod engaging said movably mounted part and projecting from the casing and engaged by a part on the jamb, whereby relative movement between the door and the jamb will move said rod to cause said movably mounted part within the casing to press against the frangible tubes to break the same.
2. In combination with door and jamb members, a casing mounted on one of said members, a frangible tube within the casing containing a noxious gas producing liquid, a part movably mounted within the casing and bearing against the rangible tube, and means actuated by relative movement between the door and j amb members to press said part against the tube` to break the same.
3. In combination with door and jamb members, a casing mounted on one of said members, a frangble tube within the casing containing a noxious gas producing liquid, a. part movably mounted within the casing and adapted lto bear against the frangible tube, and a rod engaging said movably and engaged by a part o-n the other member, whereby relative movement between `said door and jamb members will move said rod to cause said movably mounted part within the casing to press against the frangible tube to break the same. v l v 4.
