A. Application led October 26, 1922. SeralNo. 596,999.
f To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, `ROBERT ABRAM IVEAR, citizen of Ukraine, Russia, residingat Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Morris Chairs and Beds, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to combined folding chairs'and beds and has special refer-` ence to a folding morris chair adapted, by proper manipulation of the seat and back section, to be turned into bed.
One important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character. Y
A second important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of folding chair frames.
A third important object of the invention is to provide a chair of this character having a folding seat section equipped with legs arranged by improved means to be protracted when the seat is folded outward to form a bed and to be retracted when the seat is folded inward.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, they invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the chair bed folded to form a chair.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the parts arranged to form a bed.
Figure 3 is a plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a plan view of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a transverse section through the improved morris chair and bed taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
In the construction of this device there is employed a bottom frame having side members 10, a front transverse member 11, a rear transverse member 12 and intermediate transverse members 13. This frame is supported on legs 14 at the corners and is of the low morris chair type. On top of this frame, when the device is arranged to form a. chair, is an auxiliary frame .having ,side
with the' frame sides 10. Springs, 18 normally hold theseframes close together at the front end. when the device is being used as va chair, a pivot hook 19 on eachsideis engageable with an eye 20, the hook being carried by one frame andY the Veyes bythe other.
Arm frames-21 arecarri'ed by-.both ofthe side members 15 of the auxiliary frame and are provided with slots 22. vPivotedy to each side member 15 isa pairbf spaced fl'egs23 which are connected by a link 24, the connection with one of the legs being a pin and slot connection as clearly shown in Figure 1. At each side a second link 25 connects the link 24 with the respective side frame member 10, said link 25 being preferably pivoted at the pivot point with a link 17. Extending upwardly and backwardly from the rear end of the main frame isa hollow back 26 wherein may be stored pillows and otherY bedk clothes and at the rear auxiliary frame there is provided hinged connections 27 which carry a movable back 28 having Vlegs 29 pivoted thereto. Upholstery, as indicated by dash and dot lines 30, may be used to cover the various parts.
As can be seen respectively from Figures 1 and 2, when the device forms a chair, the legs 23 are housed so that they do not proliect above the arms while, when the device is used as a bed, these legs project and form supporting legs to hold the side members 15 level with thev side members 10. Also, when forming a bed, the back 28 drops down and is supported on the legs 29.
There has thus been provided a simple and n to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
I claim:
1. In a folding chair bed, a main frame, legs supporting the main frame, an auxiliary frame normally resting on the main i f' pair of legs, and other links each connecting frame in position to form a chair bottom, a pair of links each having one end connected to a side of the main frame and its other end connected to a side of the auxiliary frame adjacent the forward ends of the respective frames, a pair of spaced legs at each i side of the auxiliary frame and each having one end pivoted to said frame and extending rearwardly and upwardly from the pivot, said legs being housed within the auxiliary frame when the latter is folded on the main frame, links each connecting a' respective one of the first mentioned links to the main frame, said links being positioned and arranged to swing the legs into position at right angles to the auxiliary frame when the latter is moved to bed forming position, and
ing one end pivotally connected to the side of the main frame and its other end connected to the side of the auxiliary frame adjacent to the forward ends of the respective frames, arm frames rigidly secured to the sides 'of the auxiliary frame having guide slots formed therein, legs pivotally carried by the sides of the auxiliary frame and having their free ends mounted in said guide slots, said legs being adapted to engage the floor when the auxiliary frame is unfolded to constitute a bed section, means connected to the main frame to protract and retract said legs in accordance with the position of the auxiliaryr frame, a back section hinged to the rear edge of the auxiliary section, and a second back section carried by the main :trame and supporting the iirs't y back section in chair forming position.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in vpresence of two witnesses.A
