IMPROVEMENT IN SKIRT-PROTECTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,280, dated March 31, 1874; application tiled March 23, 1874.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FEEDRICKA M. Mo- DoNALD, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, State of Indiana, have invented an Improvement in Dress=Skirt Protectors, of which the following is a specification:
Thenature and object of the invention will be fully understood from the following general description and from the accompanying drawmgs.
Figure 1 is a side view of the device; Fig. 2, a view of the part A when first cut and partly folded; Fig. 3, a view ofthe partA when finished.
Two strips are to be cut, of convenient length and width, of any textile fabric, such as linen, Woolen, cotton, silk, or any other textile fabric, or leather, gum-cloth, sheetgum, oil-cloth, paper, or any other convenient and suitable material which can be used for the purpose. Each of these strips is to be hemmed on either side-that is, if the material used requires a hem to keep it from raveling; if n'ot, it is only to be hemmed on one side. One hem on all kinds of material is to be of such size that a cord of proper size will pass through it. Each of these hems is now to be notched, as shown by b in Fig. 3, so that they will be adapted to it each other. The
. cord c, which may be of any convenient kind,
is now put in with a suitable needle, passing it alternately through one of the remaining parts of the hem a., and then one of the hems b, until, when the cord is finally drawn through all, the parts A and- B will be adapted and arranged These two parts A and B may be fastened together with buttons, hooks, clasps, rings, and many other equivalent devices; but I consider the manner I have described the best and cheapest. The part B may be ornamented with ruf.- fles, frills, pinked work, or in any other way to suit the fancy of the wearer or maker.
To use this device, the part Ais to be sewed fast to the inside of the dress-skirt at the back, near the bottom, so that it will leave the hem b on the lower side free to be used, and so that when the part'B is put on it will be held in proper place at the bottom of the skirt to protect it from drabbling, being soiled, frayed, and worn out. The part B is now put on, as before described, and the cord c knotted at each end, so as to secure it. It will then be found, first, that the part B will be well seL cured in its place, and that the whole device is an efficient, handsome, and cheap dress-skirt protector; second, that if the part B be soiled itcan readily be det-ached from the part A by pulling out the cord c, When it can be washed or cleaned and replaced by putting in the cord c, as before described; third, in all light sum;V mer wear the part B may be made of paper, and when the paper itself is soiled it may be easily taken off and thrown away, and rea placed by anotherV similar piece at a triiiing cost.
I claim- 1. In a dress-skirt protector, the, notched hems a and b, when constructed and combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination and arrangement of the notched hems a and b and the cord c, or other suitable fastening device, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A dress-skirt protector composed of two different sections, one of which is removable at pleasure, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. As a new article of manufacture, the dress-skirt protector composed of the several parts specified, combined and arranged as hereinbefore described and set forth.
5. In combination with the skirt of a dress or other similar garment, the two parts A and B of the skirt-protector herein described, when constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
