Description

Patented pr. 22, 1924.
un* a@ JOHNv E. HULL, or conn CAMP, MISSOURI. j
BnoAoH HOLD-nn.
Application filed .Tune 29, 1921.
To all whom t may concern.' ,j Be it known that I, JOHN H. HULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cole Camp, in the county of Benton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breach Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates more particularly to dental instruments such as a holder for broaches whereby the article may be quickly and easily gripped or released and when in position is held secure against possible loosening.
The instrument consists of a handle embodying two jaws and a lever for closing the jaws and holding them pressed together with the broaeh clamped therebetween, said jaws springing apart when the lever is moved to open position thereby instantly re` leasing the broach by a single movement of the lever.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawing illustrates an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification,
Figure 1 is a side view of a broach holder embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional detail thereof.
Figure 3 is a section on the line i12-m of Fi ure 1, and
`igure 4 is a section on the line g/-g/ of Figure 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The device comprises a relatively slender' handle embodying complemental members 1 and 2 united at one end and terminating in coacting aws 3 between which the breach or other article to be held is clamped. r1`he gripping faces of the jaws 3 are serrated, toothed or otherwise roughencd to prevent Serial No. 481,366.
slipping and insure a firm grip on the article to be held. The jawsare longitudinally grooved to centerthe article and preventY Ain which the ears are positioned within the plane of themembers 1 and 2. These ears prevent lateral movement of the jaws and provide supporting means for the operating lever 5. The lever 5 is pivoted between the outer ends of the ears 4 and has a cam portion 6 upon-its inner side adjacent the pivotal end to engage the member 2 and press the same toward the member 1 whereby to close the jaws 3 and firmly and securely grip the article placed therebetween. A longitudinal groove or channel 7 is formed in the outer side of the member 2 for the reception of the major portion of the lever 5 to house the same and provide an instrument of compact form and arrangement.' The groove or channel 7 enables the outer portion of the lever to come flush with the o-uter side of the member 2 when in closed position as indi# cated most clearly in Figure 1. The complemental members 1 and 2 are spaced a substantially uniform distance apart throughout the major portion of their lengths, and their free endsare thickened inwardly to form the jaw faces 3.
The holder is of such construction that when the lever 5 is turned to occupy a position approximately at a right angle to the handle, the jaws 3 spring apart and when the lever 5 is moved to lie in the groove or channel 7, the jaws 3 are pressed together and grip the breach or other article placed therebetween. When the jaws 3 are closed the cam portion 6 of the lever 5 is beyond the fulcrum of the lever, so that the tendency of the jaws to open reacts to maintain the lever 5 in closed position and press the outer end thereof more closely against the side of the member 2. The member 2 has a notch or cut away portion adjacent its free end in which operates the cam 6. The notch and the groove 7 cooperate to permit the cam 6 to move beyond the fulcrum of the lever 5. The broach or article clamped between the jaws 3 is instantly released when the lever 5 is moved into open position since the jaws 3 spring apart by the spring action of the members 1 and 2.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is A dental broach holder comprising a pair of complemental elongated members rigidly connected at one end and spaced a substantially uniform distance apart throughout their lengths when in clamping and nonclamping positions, said members adjacenttheir free ends being thickened inwardly to provide opposed complemental jaw faces, each of said jaw faces being serrated and provided with a longitudinally extending semi-cylindrical groove to receive a broach, a pair of ears formed on one of said members at the rear end of the jaw face thereof, one of said ears being disposed at each side of said member land in the plane thereof, the
other of said members having a portion reduced in width and snugly fitting between said ears, a cam pivoted between said ears above said second member and adapted to move the complemental jaws into clamping position, said last named member having a cut away portion in which the said cam operates and having a groove to receive the cam lever when the jaws are moved into clamping position, said cut away portion and groove cooperating with said cam and cam lever whereby when the cam is in locking position the lever is flush with the outer surface of the member having the groove and the cam is beyond the fulcrum of the lever and any tendency` of the jaws tomove apart and release the broach reacts to maintain the lever in closed position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
