UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER MATCHETT, OF ALLEGHENY CITY, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS I HIS RIGHT TO RICHARD MATOHETT AND JAMES M. IRWIN, OF PITTS- BURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN PAPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,139, datcd March 31, 1874; application filed January 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER MATOHETT, of Allegheny City, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved box in position to be closed for use,
and Fig. 2 a view of the box in a closed condition; Fig. 3, the box-blank opened and folded for transportation, and Fig. 4 the blank as cut from a sheet of box-paper.
My invention relates to the construction of paper boxes for the trade; and it consists, first, in cutting the box-blank in the form and configuration shown in Fig. 4, by which great economy is secured in the use of stock; and, secondly, in creasing, folding, and pasting the box in such a manner as to be readily opened and closed at either end by the consumer, and yet allow them to be closely packed in transportation.
In the drawings, A, B, O, D, E, and F represent the four sides and the two ends of a box. Upon each end of the side A are the flaps a, and upon the side of the side D is the lip 0. Upon each end of the sides B and D are the flaps b and cl. Upon the sides of the ends E and F are the wings e e and ff, 0 and f being a little longer than 0 and f. The dotted lines shown in Fig. 4 show the creases made to facilitate the folding. Having prepared a blank, as hereinbefore described, in the further preparation of the box, the lip 0 is secured to the side A by gum or other cement, which forms the four sides of the box. The wings c and f are then secured in a similar manner to the wings e and f, the wings c and f being left longer, so as to lap over the wings e and fa little. This forms a loop upon each end, which, when folded up, receives the flap a, and if the flaps b and (Z are previously folded in closing the corner the box is completed.
My improved box requires no finishing by the consumer, but as constructed is all ready for the trade.
Before the several parts of the ends are folded together, the sides may be laid over one upon another, in the .manner shown in Fig. 3, and packed very closely for transportation. This feature not being new, I do not claim it 5 but lVhat I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A creased and folded box-blank, of the shape and configuration substantially as specified, having the sides secured together, and loops and flaps at the ends, as described.
2. A box-blank provided with the sides A, B, C, D, E, and F, the flaps a, a, b b, and d d, the lip o, and wings c f e f, substantially as described.
The above specification of my said invention signed and witnessed, at Pittsburg, this 9th.
day of January, A. D. 1874.
ALEXANDER MATCHETT.
