SLING CARRIER.
Application filed March 26, 1923. Serial No. 627,639.
2 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEAN Bnrrrsrn SAL- VAIL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at the village of Martinville, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Sling Carrier, of which the following is the specification.
The invention relates to a sling carrier as described in the present specification and shown in the accompanying drawings that form. part of the same.
The invention consists essentially of the novel features pointed out broadly and specifically in the claims for novelty following a description in detail of an acceptable form of the invention.
The objects of the invention are to la cilitate the handling of barrels, poles, timhere or packages of any kind, so that two persons can move a comparatively large and heavy package, barrel or piece with comfort and ease; to simplify the application of a carrying harness and thereby save time and trouble in the removing and transport ing of barrels or other pieces in quantities; to furnish a device to the public at a reasonable price; and generally to provide a durable and eflicient carrier for the aforesaid purposes.
in the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barrel showing the carrier applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a perspective View of the harness and grips assembled and apart from the barrel.
Like numerals of reference indicate cor responding parts in the various figures.
Referring to the drawings, the grip handies 1 and 2 are each formed of the side bars 3 and 4 joined at their outer ends by the handles 5 and extending inwardly from said handle to'the reinforcing transverse bar 6, which terminates at one end in the eye 7 beyond the side bar 3 and at the other end in the eye 8 beyond the side bar 4-. The side bars 3 and 4. are ofiset upwardly from the bar 6 and taper by the receding backs 9 and curved edge faces 10 to the points 11 which are sharp enough togrip the barrel. The grips l and 2 near the points are joined by the reinforcing rod 12.
The link fasteners 13 are made in closed loop form and narrowed down from the open chain passage openings 14- vto form a locking slot 15 for the links of the chains 16 and 17, which are passed through the openings 1a in the closed loops l8 and then the proper length slipped into the slots 15. The chain 16 is permanently fastened to one eye 7 and the chain 17 to one eye 8, while the loops or link fasteners 13 are permanently fastened to the other eyes "2' and 8.
In the operation of this invention the barrel is slung in the chains 16 and 17 and the wall of the barrel gripped by the grip handles 1 and 2. The offsets of the grip side bars engage the barrel at the points and the chains are tightened until they fit the barrel snugly, so that the grip handles are on opposite sides. As the chains extend from the angle of the offsets, the pull on the sling 1S direct through to the handles proper,
while the grips proper avoid any possibility of the sling slipping and maintain the handies in an outwardly projecting position at or about right angles to the object carried.
By this means a heavy cask may be carried with comparative ease and while it is more especially designed for transporting barrels many other piecesand packages may be carried.
W hat I claim is 1. In a sling carrier, a pair of grips, each having side bars ofiset intermediate of their len th and tapering to a point and joined together at and intermediately by cross rods forming eyes at the angle of the offset, and chain lengths suitably secured to said eyes from grip to grip and forming the sling for the piece carried.
2. in a sling carrier, a pair of grips, each having side bars offset and tapering to pointed inner ends and joined at the outer ends by a handle bar and at the ofiset angle by a reinforcing rod terminating in eyes be yond the bars and adjacent to the points by a reinforcing rod, a chain cured to an eye of each grip and a link fastener secured to each of the remaining eyes and having a chain passage opening and a narrowed link holder, said chains passing from grip to grip and fastening in said link fasteners.
Signed at Montreal, Quebec, this 16th day of March, 1923.
J. BAPTIS-TE SALVAIL.
