1,490,966 PATENT foFrlcE.
UNITED STATES JMES'DELL, 0F SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
INJECTOB INSTRUMENT.
Application tiled March 7, 1921.
. whereof the following is aspeciication.
This invention relates to injector instruments, for injecting liquids into otherwise more or less inaccessible places, such asinjeeting liquid medicaments into the orifices of the body, for therapeutic purposes.
In general, the instrument consists in a hollow cylindrical body, having a solid head with a channel therethrough'connecting the hollow with the outer space. This body is made of a comprcssible material, such as rubber, and is encased in a resistant or stiff casing. Inside the casingis a compression plate, and the casing is provided with an aperture for the thumb of the user, who presses in the compression plate and thereby squeezes the compressible body` and'determines the exudation of its contents, to any desired degree. A slidable sleeve is applied to the casing, to protect the thumb aperture, and the compression plate. A cap is applied to the end of the sleeve, through which the head projects, to lprotect the latter when not in use, and this cap has a plug adapted to enter the channel through the head, and plug the same, when the cap is in place, thus efi'ectivel preventing lany undesired exudation ci] the contents of the cylinder.
In the accompanying one sheet of vdrawing I have shown an instrument containing my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the 'complete instrument. ready for use, the cap and the sleeve being in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section view, showing the complete instrument, with all the parts assembled.
Figure 3 is a cross-section on the line 3. 3. of Figure 2.
In the figures g--The numeral 1 represents a hollow cylindrical body. composed of rubber. or other compres-sible. material, closed at one end by the, preferably integral, end wall 2, and at the other end by the tapered head 3. The head 3 is bored by a channel 4, through which liquid may be gotten into or out of the interior of the body 1.
The body 1 is enclosed in a casingl 5, preferably of metal, covering the cylindrical Serial No. 450,256.
portion, and the back lof the cylinder, and extendingto the head 3, but not covering the latter. The back end ofthe casing ma be flanged outward, or provided with a co lar as at 6, to furnish asto for the sleeve, presently to be'deseribed. l t 7 is an orifice in the sideof the casing 5, extending partly around the same, as shown in Figure 1 and by dotted linesin Figure 2. This orifice is covered by a sleeve 8, when the instrument is out of-use, which sleeve may slide along the casing, to uncover said orifice when it is desired to use the instrument.
Within the casing 5, and resting against the cylindrical body 1, is a presser plate 9, pressure upon which serves to compress the body 1, and cause the contents thereof to exude through the channel 4 in head 3. The
plate 9 may be providedwith an upstandin portion 10, projecting into orifice 7, an adapted to be engaged b the thumb of the operator, and serving Ia so to position the plate with respect to the other members of the instrument.
Casing 5 is provided, at its o en end, with v a cap 11, for the rotection of ead 3, which cap 1s removed w en the instrument is to be used. Thee-apmay be perforated, as at 12, to prevent atmospheric resistance to its displacement or removal. The cap is provided with a plug 13, adapted to act as al valve in closing channel 4, when the cap is in place,
4and aY stopper 14 secured. around the cas- IIaving thus ydescribed my invention, and
an embodiment of it, in the full, clear and l exact terms required by law,- and knowing that it comprises novel, useful and valuable improvements in the art to which itA pertains,
I here state that I do not wish to be limited' to the precise construction and. arrangement of the several parts, asherein set forth, as l the same may be variously modified by a skilled mechanic Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
' What I claim and. desire to secure by Letters Patent of the. United States, is the following, to wit 1. An injector instrument, comprising, in combination, a cylinder having a closed chamber therein and a tapered head at one end thereof, said head being perforated, a casing for said cylinder, having an orifice means in said orifice for compressing said cylinder and causing the exudation of liquid within said chamber, and means for cover-V ing said orifice and preventing thereby accidental operation of said compressing means` 2. An injector instrument, comprising, in combination, a hollow exible cylinder, having a closed end, and a perforated head at its oppositeend, a casing for said cylinder, means through said casing for compressing said cylinder and causing the exudation of liquid therefrom, means engagin freely said casing provided with a plu a apted to close said perforation on sah? head, and means to cover said compressing means.
3. An injector instrument, comprising, in combinatioma closed hollow body having a perforated head, a casing for said body and a removable cap for said head engaging freely said casing, a plug on said cap projecting into said perforation in said head and adapted to close the same, said casing having an orifice, means in said orifice permitting nger pressure upon said body, and causing vthereby the exudation of liquid therein and afsleeve on said casing adapted to cover said orifice.
4. An injector instrument, comprising, in combination, a closed hollow cylindrlcal body, having a perforated head, a casing for said body and a removable'cap for Said head, said casing having an orifice, a finger late registering with said orifice adapte to transmit pressure to said body, means to close said orifice and a plug projecting from plaidd cap to close said perforation on said 5. An injector instrument, comprising, in combination, a closed hollow cylinder adapted to contain liquid, said cylinder having at one end a tapered and head, a casing enclosing said cy inder and adapted to rotect the same, said casing having a thumb) orifice extending partly around its side, a pressure late registering with said orifice and adapted to transmit pressure to said cylinder, a sleeve, slidable upon said casing and adapted to cover said orifice, a cap a plied to the head end of said casing, and a apted to cover said head, said cap provided with valve means projecting in said perforation of the head and close the same when not in use. f
In testimony that I claim the foregoin I have hereto set my hand this 1st day of March, 1921.
JAMES DELL.
