- DISPENSING TUBE Application led May 11',
This invention relates in general to appliances vfor collapsible tubes for dispensing paints, pastes, and thelike, and more particularly .to a. novel. form of closure means therefor. e
Many expedients have been employed for avoiding the obvious disadvantages in the use of the conventional screw cap type of closure. r1`hese departures, however, usually involve a complicated construction clumsy to operate, and thus defeat their own purpose in that the user of' the tube would be as hesitant about taking the trouble to operate same as he would be to screw on the usual cap. Moreover, the usual appliance does not safeguard the tube against leakage whe-. closed which is an objectionable feature of packing such tubes amongst other luggage.
The object of this invention is not only to provide an instinctively operable closure means but to render it possible to actuate a seal for the mouthof the tube and a valve means against the further flow of material to the mouth, simultaneously by a single man ual operation.
The provision of the valve means, as will hereinafter be more fully described, relieves the seal over the tube mouth of all internal fluid pressure in case the tube is inadvertently compressed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, theinvention consists in the combination of parts land in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, certain embodiments thereof being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a collapsible tube with the improved closure means attached to the neck portion which is shown integral with the body'of the tube;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary View in perspective of the same. showing the elosu're means in closed position:
Figure 3 is the same as Figure 2 with the closure means in opened position;
Figure 4 is a view of one form of my invention in vertical Isection through the neck of the tube and the closure means in which the neck is 'provided with interior screw threads Afor attachment tothe conventional4 tube body;

tube, the passageway through the neck beingl of a substantially cirpular and restricted nature.
leo
The neck 2 has'a tapered passageway bored i i transversely therethrough. The closure member ponsists of a combined valve member comprisin'g a tapered barrel 3 with a port 4 to register with the bore 12 of the neck 2, and a sealing member 7 for the mouth- 11 of the tube. The combined member may be cast integral with an upwardly extending shank 5 curved over the mouth 11 at 7, and terminating in.an inwardly extending gripping spring flange 6 to engage the neck 2, thus holding the seal and valve in closed position. Above the seal is a, raised portion with a roughened surface 8 for easy engagement and of the valve barrel is free and of such diameter as to conform-with a corresponding aperture in the neck 2 of the tube.
In assembling the device for use it is only necessary to push the valve barrel through the holes in the neck and the closure member is assembled in opened position, the bore 12 and the valve port 4 registering. Upon rotation of the device the seal 7 is placed over the tube mouth 11- and simultaneously the bore 12 of the neck is closed by the valve barrel, the bore 12 and the valve port 4 beingout of register.
The operation is instinctively simple in that no screw means are employed. The valve 3 in the rigid'neck portion 2 when closed relieves the seal 7 of ail internal pressure in case the tube is inadvertently compressed. The
device moreover, is of simple construction easily and cheaply manufactured and adaptable to various types of dispensing apparatus.
This is particularly true as shown in the form of my invention disclosed iii-Figure 6 in which the body portion of the conventional .tube is provided with the usual screwthreaded portion 14. The neck portion 2 may be provided with interior screw threads suitable for engagement with those indicated at 14. Thus the neck 2 and the closure means included therein may be made separately and applied to the usual tube in place of the cap 1t is to bevnoted that the end 3 inactual use. "Moreover, an individual may i re eat the -use 'ci this device in 4connection -wlth an'indelinite number ofthe ordinary tubes as the contents thereof become depleted.' Having thus described my invention what Iclaim1s a Q 1. The combination with a dispensing tube -havin'g a neck portionwith a discharge open-` members are simultaneously operable. j 3. The combination Witha collapsible dispensing tube havingl a detachable neck portion with a discharge opening therein, a closure member for said opening, said member comprising a spring clip pivotally mounted on said neck portion, Said clip being adapted to extend over said opening and grip the end of the neck when in closed position," a rotary Valve member extending transversely through 1 .1f/creas said neck portion and integral with said closure mem er whereby the two members are simultaneousl operable.
4. Thecom ination with a collapsible dispensing tube having a comparatively rigid neck portion With a discharge opening therein, a combined integral valve and closure member for said neck portion and said discharge opening respectively, said Combined member comprising a'tapered rotary valve extending transversely through said neck lportion, and an angular spring clip adapted to be swung about the rotary valve as an axis,A
into engaged position over the discharge end of said neck portion for'closing said discharge opening. v i 7 A 5. The combination with a collapsible dispensing tube having a comparatively rigid neck portion with a discharge opening therein, :i combined integral Valve and closure member for saidv neck ortion and said discharge opening respectively, said combined member comprising atapered vrotary valve extending transversely through said neck portion, and an angular spring clip'a-dapted to be swung about' the rotary valve as an axis, into engaged position over the discharge end of said neck portion for closing said discharge opening, said neck portion being detachably -connected to the remainder of .said tube.
In testimony. whereo I affix my signature.
