PATENT OFFICE.
NITED STATES THOMAS M. ALLEN, OF MACON, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,088 dated March 31, 1874; application filed December 20, 1873. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. ALLEN, of Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a specification Figure l is a side view of my improved plow, parts being broken away to show the construction; and Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
The invention is an in'iprovement in the class of plows whose standards and the braces therefor are made adjustable to vary the inclination of the share, and thereby regulate the depth it shall enter and run in the ground.
The features of novelty relate to the connections of the beam, standard, brace, and handles, as hereinafter described.
A is the plow-beam, to the forwardend of which the draft is applied. Upon the rear end of the beam A is formed a tenon, the shoulders of which areconcaved upon the arc of a circle, having its center in the center of the bolt-hole in said tenon. The tenon or" the beam A enters a slot in the standard B, where it is pivoted and secured in place by a bolt passing through'the said standard and tenon. Upon the forward side of the standard B is formed a projection, which is curved upon the arc of a circle having its center in the center of the bolt-hole of said standard, so as to fit against the concaved shoulders of the beam A, and thus form a close joint whatever be the adjustment of said beam and standard. 0 are the handles, the forward ends of which are pivoted to the opposite sides of the beam A by a bolt. In the upper part. of the handles G are formed short longitudinal slots to receive the ends of the round D or screws, or a rod attached to said round. The middle part of the round D passes through a short longitudinal slot in the upper end of the standard, where it is secured in place by a wedgekey, E. F is a curved brace, the lower end of which is secured and pivoted in a slot in the lower end of the standard B. The upper end of the brace F enters a longitudinal groove in the under side of the beam. In the lower edge of the upper end of the brace F is formed a notch, and in the lower side of the beam A is formed a series of notches to receive the clamp or keeper G, which passes around the beam A and the end of the brace F. H. is a wedge-key, placed upon the upper side of the beam A, and which passes through the clamp G, so as to draw its lower part into the notches of the brace F and beam A, and thus hold the said brace securely in place. I is the plow-plate, which has a slot formed in its upper part, through which the brace F is passed. The upper edge of the plow plate I rests against a shoulder formed upon the forward side of the lower part of the standard B, as shown in Fig. 1, where it is secured in place by a small clamping-plate, J, which is secured detachably to the standard B by a bolt, K, passing through the said plate and standard.
By this construction, by loosening the bolt K and detaching the clamp G from the upper end of the brace F, the plow-plate may be detached when desire-Ll. By this construction, also, the beam A, standard B, and brace F may be readily adjusted to cause the plow to work deeper or shallower, as may be desired.
I do not claim connecting the handles or standards of a plow to the beam so as to be adjustable at dili'erent angles thereto, nor a slotted share or shovel combined with a pivoted brace; but
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Batent- In a plow, the combination and arrangement, as shown and described, of the pivoted standard B, slotted at each end, the slotted handles 0, bar 1), provided with clamp-nuts, the beam A, having a notched groove in its under side, the clamp or keeper G, wedge H, pivoted brace F, slotted shovel I, and ing device J K, all connected to opcraie S specified.
THOMAS MURELL ALLEN.
