A. ANDERSQN SHARPENER Filed June 7. 1923 A TTORNE YS Patented Apr. 15, 19124.
ilhliTEfi STATES @FFlQEl AXEL ANDERSON, OF \VAE?ETON, NORTH DAKGTA.
Application filed June 7,
Be it known that I, AXEL ANnnRsoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of l i ahpeton, in the county of Richland and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to improvements in sharpeners, more particularly to Sharpeners for chalk such as that used by tailors in marking fabric and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient sharpening device which affords facilities for sharpening a piece of I chalk or like objectquickly and conveniently and which also'embodies means for c0llecting all the dust and particles produced by the sharpening operation so that such dust and particles are not permitted to fall upon articles ad acent to the sharpening device but may be disposed of in any si'iitable and desired manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sharpening device of the character described which is not likely to get out of order easilyor to cause a piece of chalk which is being sharpenedito be broken and which will last a long time in the service for which it is intended without requiring the repair or replacement of any of the parts thereof.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanya ing drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a sharpener embodying the invention,
Figure'Q is a longitudinal vertical section through the sharpener,
Figure 3 is a perspective group view showing a slide bar which is comprised in the device, and the supporting and guiding member for the slide bar, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a chalk rest which. is adapted to be carried by the slide bar.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a container or case designated generally 1 which includes a bottom 2, a pair of parallel, vertically disposed sides 3 and a pair of vertically disposed parallel ends l, all connected together in any suitable known manner to provide a compartment which is open I snanrnnnn.
1923. Serial No. 343,975.
at its upper end and which may be closed by a lid 5 which is included in the case and is supported in any suitable known manner to slide in a horizontal plane to and from the position illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. An elongated supporting member or bar 6 has a body portion which is substantially channelshaped in cross sectional contour and is selfficiently long to span the space between the inner walls of the ends 4, being provided with attaching portions 7 atthe opposite ends thereof which are secured by screws 8 or like fastening devices to the ends 4. so that the body of the supporting member 6 will be supported in underlying parallel relation to tlielid 5 and somewhat nearer to the plane of the lid 5 than to that of the bottom 2. i
As hereinbeforc stated, the body of the supporting member 6 is channel-shaped in cross sectional contour and the flanges 9 thereof extend upwardly from the plane of the web of the body of the supporting member and prevent lateral displacement from the supporting member of a slide bar 10 which adapted to be partially inserted through an opening 11 in one of the ends lto slide in the direction of its length on the supporting member 6 between the flanges 9 of the latter.
The length of the slide bar 10 is greater than that of the case 1 so that one end portion of the slide bar protrudes from the case through the opening 11 at all times and this rotruding end portion may be provided with an apertiu'e 12 adapted to be engaged by the finger of a hand and the slide bar thus manipulated conveniently.
A pair of cutter blades 13 are carried upon. the upper side of the portion of the slide barlO which extends'interiorly of the case 1. Each of the cutters 13 is angular in cross sectional contour and includes a flat attaching portion 13 and a blade portion 13 which is upstanding from one edge of the attaching portion. The attachin portion 13 has lateral notches 14 in the side edge thereof through which screws 15 may be inserted into engagement with the slide bar 10 to secure the cutter 13 in a desired position upon the slide bar 10. The portion 13" of each of the cutters has one end thereof 'ineinber 6.
portion 13 beveled as indicated at 17 to provide a cutting edge.
The cutters 13 are arranged upon the slide bar 10 in substantially V-shaped formation, the portions 13* converging nearly together along the longitudinal inedian line of the slide bar and the cutters 13 being nearer to each other at their ends which are provided with the cutting edges 16 and 17 than at their opposite ends. The cutters 13 may be moved relatively 'toeach other to vary the 'distancebetiveen the adjacent ends of the cutters by loosening the screws 15,1naking the desired adjustment and then tightening the screws 15. It is to be observed that the cutting edges 16 of the two cutters 13 are oppositely beveled. The cutters 13 are arranged ontlie slide bar 10 with the cutting edges 16 in confronting relation to the end 4: Whichis provided with the opening 11 and the lower portions of the cutting edges 16 extend across an opening 18 which at all times overlies arelatively large aperture 19 in the body of the supporting and guiding Au elongated opening 20 is termed through the lid along the longitudiiial inedian line of the latter and in vertical alignment with the longitudinal median lineot the slide bar 10, whereby avertical planeintersecting the slide bar along its longitudinal median line and intersecting the. slot along its longitudinal niedian line will be located midway between the cutting edges 16 of the pair of cutters 13 7 Therefore, a piece of chalk 21 such as that used by tailors will be held inposition V r to be engaged by the cutting edges 16 when The 7 guide 'tively are'disposed upon the slide bar 10 at opposite ends oi the cutters 13 and along the longitudinal niedian lines of the slide bars. 22 has laterally extending attaching[port-ions; 22 having slots' 24 therein through which screws 25; may
projected [into engagement with the slide bar and the guide 22 thus secured in adjusted position in respectto the cutting edges 16 of the cutters, the
:guide 22 being positioned between the cutting edges 16 and the end 4 which is .providedi'with' the opening 11. The sides of V the Y-shaped body'of the guide22 are un-' Vdercut or rearwardly ibeveled at the ends thereof proximate to the cutting edges 16 .as indicated at 26 so that the upper edge portions of the sides of the V-shaped body dust as may be pushed along the guide 22 extend in overlying relation 1 iii-e 18. The guide 23 also has portions such as indicated at 27 secured by screws 28 to the slide ,0 so that the sides of the t -shaped of the guide 23 extend between the upstandi g portions 13 of the cutters, the sides oi? the V-SllZlPQd body of the guide 13 being beveled at their 11ilS \Vl1lCl1 are iniiide e t sorted between the cutter portions 13 as iiidicatcd at The beveled edge portions be close against the inner Walls of the upstanding portions 13 in adjacent relation to tl cutting edges 16.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation tiiciuot may be readily understood The piece oi? chalk which is to be sharpened is ins l Y i halloiv depressions in the uppertace of til: lid en t laterally from the aperture 20 apted to partially receive the and are an nngersgrasping the piece or chalk so that the latter may be held liij'nily when it has been partially inserted tliroiighthe aperture 2010 rest at its lower end upon'the guide 22 between the "f-sluiped sides of the body of the latter. V
The case 1 is held iininovahle and theslide bar 10 is pulled outii'arch thereby moving the cutters 13 into contact with the inserted erted through the aperture 20 in the lid.
end portion or :thepiece of chalk, whereby i the inserted'end portion will be sharpened and the sharpened end portionwill pass'between the upstanding portions 13 ot the cutters between the sides of the Veshaped body 01 the guide 23 and along the latter; Practically all the particles which are cut from the piece of chalk during the sharpening operation ivill fall through the aperture 18 in the slide bar 10and the opening 19 in the supporting member 6' to the bottom f of the case. Such particles of thechall: and
23 in advance of the sharpened end of the. piece ot chalk tall through an opening 31' in the slide bar atthe rear endot the guide and thence through one of tlieopenings 32 in the bottom of'tliebody' of the-support 61o the bottoni of the case. particles maybe disposed or" subsequently in any desired manner.
It will lie-apparent that a piecerot chalk such as that ordinarily used by tailors "or 'any'other siinilar object inade of a friable material may be quickly and convenieilitly The collected chalk I sharpened when my iinproied sharpening device is used in the manner described and that the sharpened end'portion ot' the challi or like article s not likelyrto be brokendur; fing the. sharpening oper V V on while at the same tune all dust and'l'ilre particles cut from the piece of'challt or like article during the sharpening operation are prevented from floating about in the airand falling upon articles adjacent in the sharpening device but on the contrary are collected and may be disposed of subsequently. Obviously, my invention susceptible of i3 embodiment in forms other than that illustrated in the accompanying drawing and I therefore consider as my own all modifications and adaptations of the form of the de vice disclosed herein which fairly fall within tie scope of the appended claims.
