J. CALLAHAN SANITARY COVER Filed Jan. 25. 1922 Patented 15, 19

SANITARY CDVER.
Application filed January 25, 1922. Serial Ito. 531,300.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES CALLAHAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Glen Cove, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to sanitary cover-means for garbage pails, commodes, and like containers.
An object of the invention is to provide a receptacle cover having disinfectant means constituting an air-tight joint or seal to prevent the escape of obnoxious gases from the receptacle.
An additional object is to provide an improved sanitary cover embodying a receptacle-supported seal ring having a removable cover and an auxiliary member associated with the ring in the capacity of a seat.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the continuance of the following description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section showing a part of the container with the covermeans applied thereto.
F igure 2 is a top plan view of the cover means.
Figure 3 is a plan View of the seal-ring with the cover removed to show the auxiliary member in place, and,
Figure 4- is a vertical cross section taken on line t- 1 of Figure 3.
This sanitary cover may be made of any suitable n aterial and consists of an annulus or ring having an endless circular, groove or trough 11. This trough is walled in on one side by the inner circular flange 12 of the ring and on the outside by the ridge or humped portion 13. This ring its down over the mouth of the container 14 to wnich applied and which may be a garbage pail or other container and is secured in place by tongues 15 which project outwardly from the circumference of the ring in relatively spaced relation. These tongues are bent down to engage under the beaded top of the container as shown at 16. i Vhen in this position, the ring provides a support for cover 17 Which fits down into trough 11 of the ring. A filler of absorbent material is placed in the trough and thoroughly soaked in some disinfectant. Cover 17 by reason of its own weight continuously bears down on filler 18, compressing same and forcing the disinfectant to drop into the interior of the container through op sings 19 in the inner flange. It will also be seen that the filler provides an airtight seal together with the cm-erwhereby the escape of obnoxious gases from the container is prevented as long as the cover is on. The cover is provided with a hand-hold 20 to facilitate its replacement or removal. Ring 10 may also be utilized to support a seat 21 over a receptacle when the latter is used as a commode. The seat has a central opening 22 which is of a diameter to fit over central flange 12 of the ring being provided with supporting elements 23, such as tongue projections which may be bent to hook over the flange as shown in Figure 8. When not in use the seat is covered by cover 17 which fits down into the ring. As thus employed, the invention will be seen to provide sanitary seat capable of being readily applied to or detached from a commode and one 'which is in all respects sanitary.
From the foregoing it is believed that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily understood and therefore further detailed description is deemed unnecessary.
Vhat is claimed is 1. A sanitary cover embodying an annular member having a central groove or trough and dischr ge openings at the inner circumference of the trough, absorbentma terial within said trough and saturated with a disinfectant and a cover for the said ring, said cover -tting down into the trough of the ring and compressing the absorbent material for forcing the disinfectant through the openings of the trough.
2. A sanitary cover for garbage pails, commodes, and like containers, comprising an annulus having interposition between a pail and the cover thereof, said annulus having supporting means at its outer circumference for attachment to the said pail and presenting a perforated trough at its inner circumference to seat the said cover, and a filler of absorbent material within the trough and supporting the cover, said material being saturated with a disinfectant and compressed by the weight of the cover for forcing the disinfectant into the interior of the pail thru the openings of the said trough.
3. In a device of the character described,
in combination with a pail of an annulus arranged therein adjacent the upper edge, tongues on said annulus positioned over the upper edge of said pail, means carried by said tongues to engage said pail and maintain said annulus rigid with respect thereto, a trough carried by said annulus in said pail, said trough being perforated at the bottom, a filler of absorbent material in said trough, said material being saturated with a disinfectant, a cover for said pail having its perimetrical edges turned downwardly to rest on said absorbent material wherebl the eight of said cover will tend to force the disinfectant through the perforations in said trough into the interior of the pail, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JAMES CALLAHAN.
