IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING-HINGES FOR DOORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,979, dated March 24, 1874; application filed February 4, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHANN PETER, of Waehrin g, near Vienna, in the Empire of Austria, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring-Hinges for Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make anduse the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specilication, in which drawing- Figure l represents a front view of a door with my improved hinge. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same in a larger scale than the previous iginfe. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same.

This invention consists in the arrangement of two levers, which are secured to the opposite ends of a sprin g inclosed in a tubular case, which is fastened to the back edge of a door, the loose ends of said levers being made to bear from opposite sides on a stud secured in the top rail of the door-frame, in such a manner that when the door is opened in either direction, the spring is strained by the action of the stud on one of the levers, and when the door is released it closes automatically, and is retained in a closed position by the combined action of the two levers. The ease which contains the two springs is provided with a socket to engage with a pin which is fastened in the top rail of the door frame, and which is so arranged that it can be raised for the purpose of inserting or removing` the door.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a door, to the back edge of which is secured a tubular case, B, which contains the spring C. The lower end of this spring is fastened in a head, a, which is firmly secured to a pin, b, that extends up through the center of the spring, and carries on its top end a lever, D. The upper end of said spring is fastened to a tube, c, which embraces the pin b and carries a lever, D', so that when the spring is strained, before said levers are secured in position, the tendency of the spring will be to close up the levers toward each other. In the top rail E of the door-frame is secured a stud, F, which is, by preference, made in the form of an india-rubber roller, and which is so situated that when the door is closed, the levers D D' close up against said stud from opposite sides. In the upper part of the case B is a socket, d, to receive a pin, e, which slides up and down in a guide-box, f, secured to the top rail of the door-frame. Said pin engages with a lever, g, which has its fulcrum on a standard, le., and the outer bifurcated end of which engages with a groove near the upper end of a screw, i, which is tapped in the face-plate of the guide-box f. By means of this screw and lever the pin e can be raised out of the socket d, or depressed into the same, so that when the pin is raised the door can be readily adjusted in the desired position, and then the pin can be depressed so as to form the fulcr'um of the door.
If the door is opened in either direction, one of the levers D or D' is retained in position by the stud F, and consequently the tension of the spring C is increased, and when the door is released it closes automatically, and it is retained in a closed position by the combined action of the levers D D', the spring C being strained originally to such a degree that said levers are enabled to retain the door against the action of the wind or drafts of air which may strike the saine.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of two levers, D D', with a spring, C, inclosed in a tubular case, B, which is fastened to a door, and with a stud or roller, F, secured to the door-frame, said stud being made to catch between the levers D D', substantially as and for the purpose shown and described. l
2. The combination of a pin, e, and adjusting-lever g, with the spring box or case B, levers D D', and stud or roller F, all constructed and operating substantially as set forth.
