Mrs srrs GEORGE HAROLD BAKER, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
FILE WITH EXPANSIBLE POCKE'IS.
Application filed June 30, 1922.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE HAROLD BAKER, of London, England, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, have 8 invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Files with Expansible Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to index files with 1 expansible pockets and has for its object to provide an improved index file of this type.
In my improved index file a series of combined expansible pockets is able to expand to the fullest possible extent on all sides of the pockets and in a general direction at right angles to the surface of the end pocket of the series when in its contracted or empty and closed position, in contradistinction to the known expanding files which open out after the manner of a fan in which the lower sides of the pockets are naturally unable to expand to the same extent as the upper sides; and further in my improved index file I completely enclose the said expanding pockets in a box having rigid walls which maintain a rectangular form when closed or expanded in contradistinction to the known horizontally expanding files which have been partially enclosed with flexible 80 covers, which bulge when filled with papers and in the shut position and which leave parts of the expanding pockets unprotected.
Files made in accordance with this invention are simple and cheap to manufacture, and are of a convenient size and light weight, which enables them to be kept at hand on a book-shelf and to be readily picked up; and further they are opened with a minimum of trouble, as on the release of a single catch the front is freed and the hinged side falls open.
One form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is an end view of the file in the ex tended position;
Fig. 2 is a plan of the file in the extended position;
Fig. 3 is a plan showing the box open and the pockets contracted;
Fig. 4c is an end view of the file in the closed position;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary end view on a large scale.
Referring to the drawings the box is made in the form of a book and comprises a back Serial No. 572,068.
a, side 6 and ends 0 c which are all rigidly secured to each other, a side 9 hinged to the back at h and a front 70 hinged to the side Z) at m.
Expanding pockets are secured to the side b of the box, and comprise side leaves p, expandible folds g Q at the ends and expandible folds 1' at the back. 8 is a catch on the front 76 of the box adapted to engage a recess t in the hinged side 9.
The files may be made of any suitable material; for instance the expanding pockets may be made of good quality cardboard with an extra thick board forming the side leaf at the free end of the series of pockets. The end folds of the pockets may be provided with a strip of cloth along their top edges in order to prevent their being torn. The box may be made of cardboard or wood covered with paper or cloth, or it may be made of any other suitable material.
Referring to Fig. 5, which shows a preferred method of hinging the front k to the box, it is a part of the side 7) which projects beyond the ends 0 c to an extent equal to the thickness of the front 72.
Two strips of cloth are secured to the top 70 and side I); both strips being secured at w and ac to the top, and one being secured at 3/ to the side Z) and the other at z and 2 to the side 6, thereby forming a hinge at 3. By this means there is no tendency for the cloth to be drawn away at the hinge line from the side and front.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is r A file comprising a box having an appearance and dimensions similar to those of a book, said box comprising a back which is adapted to form the base when the box is being opened, two ends and one side rigidly secured to the back, a front hinged to the fixed side, a side hinged to the back, and a securing device for connecting at will the free edge of the hinged side to the free edge of the front; and a series of pockets in which all the edges. of each pocket are adapted to expand an approximately equal amount, said pockets being secured at one end to the fixed side of the box, being adapted to be completely enclosed by the box when closed, and to rest on the back and the hinged side when the file is expanded.
GEORGE HAROLD BAKER.
