To aZZ whom it may concem: '4 Be lt known that we, THOMAS ALEXANDER BoYD and HAROLD ARTHUR Born, both' ,subf of Great Britain j and` jects of the King Northern Ireland, and residing at' Shettleston, near Glasgow, Scotland, have Vinvented a certain, new and useful Improvement in' Twisting 'Frames for Threads or F ilaments,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention refers'to an` improved machine for imparting spin or'twist to sets ofV threads or filaments, such for. example 'as filaments of artificial silk, from a carrier andtwisting and winding them on to a bobbin. i j w 'i I According to the invention, the threads or filaments are drawn from a rotatin'g carrier whichl unwinds the threads or filaments without itself, imparting any twist to'theinl The threads or filaments pass directly'from the carrier to a twisting or flyer spindle.
which draws them from the carrier, twists them 'and winds them on to. a'bobbin; The threads or filaments are drawnv ofl substantially at right anglesto the axis of ,the carf rier which is rotated at a fiXed speed in relation to the speed of the twisting spindle and so'disposed that' the twist passes from' the spindle to the face 'of the carrier, tend ments of the set* to be twistedtogethefj' The invention comprises'means forsimul? taneouslv starting and stopping the v'twisting spindle and the carrier corresponding 'toan individual spindle The invention is illustrated vin part elevation part Vertical section in thefigure of the accompanying drawing, a
As shown, 1 denotes a spindle 'ra'il carried on a framing disposed horizontally and eX- tending from end to end along the front'of the machine.V On the rail 1, at suitable distances apart, we mount'a row ofv Vertical flyer spindles 2 which are each driven by a cord or tape 3 from a tin roller or driving -wharve 2' on vthe spindle 2-and thenceto ;and aroundthe tin roller 4. The. tensionV .pulley 7 isheld at its vhighest point by a releasable catch 8 whichengages at 62 the lever V(15.-;When the ,catchl 8 is disengaged and the'tension pulley 7 -is lowered, the cord Bis untensioned and gripped,`th`ereb v braking and stopping the spindle 2.Z The cord 3, as it proceeds i from the tin roller 4, to the spindle 2, passes jbetween a stationary' and a 'movable grip. The upper grip 9' lis stationary and is formed on the bracket 5.l` drawing jthem. A
The -lower `or movable grip 63 is formed on the front -end of the ever 6 which front vend'rises-to grip the cord as theinner end of the leverfallsl Below and in front of .the'tin roller 4 on' a fulcrum parallel therewith is fixed'a rodlO extending from end to end of the frame. 'At one :side of each lever (9' we mount on therod 10a vbell' crank 11 having onV its 'Vertical 'arm 11"'a.'spindle step12.V The horizontal arm 112 ofthe. bell crank V111 extends below the tin roller 4 and carrie'svv a weight* 13.v In'the step 12 we mount a Vertical` spindlef14 extending upwards to a creel shaft hereafter described. Near the lower end 14' of the vertioalspindle `14 we mount'a'wharve '16 with severalv V-grooves v of' unequal diameterf and-at. 'about' the same ing to lick up the several threads lor fila-' height' we provide integral With the Wharve cord '15' Inaintained taut, `the`^speed of' :rotation'vof the spindlef'14 depending on theselection ofV V-grooves'jengaged Vby, the cord i 2' an additional'wharve2? having V-grooves z jalso of un'equal V.dia'mete'r'to receive a cord w 15 by :whichithe spindle 14 is driven. By 'means of thel bell Crank 'lllfthe'spindle 14 is pressed away from the spindle2` and the 15. At a suitablet'distance above the spindle 2"and behindthe same We mount a'pair of' creel lrails 18,1 disposed horizpontally, parallel with the tinroller' 4 and at a suitable distanceapartfi On these'creel'rails 18 we mount in bearings 19 a creel shaftV 20 the axis of which is substantially perpendicular to the axis of the spindle 2. On the creel shaft 20 we mount a worm wheel 21 meshing With a worm 22 on the upper end 142 of the spindle 14. The upper end 142 of the spindle 14 is supported in an oscillating bearing 23 carried in an oil box 24 bolted to the front creel, rail 18. On the forward end 20' of the shaft 20 we mount a carrier 25 .on which filaments 26 have been wound, said carrier being located Substantially on the line of the axis of the spindle 2. The set of filaments 26 is carried downwards from the carrier 25 to the fiyer spindle 2 and twisted and wound on to the twisting bobbin 27 coaxial with said spindle' 2. l/Vhen the flyer spindle 2 is started, it drivs the Vertical spindle 14, the sliaft 20 and the carrier 25 which latter, as it rotates, delivers the set of filainents 26 to the spindle2. As the spindle 2 rotates, the twist 'passes upwards on to the set of filaments 2,6V and tends to lick up the filainents as they aretwistedand pass dowiiwards. When the fiyer spindle 2 is started or stopped, the carrier `25 is instantly started or stopped. The'bobbin27 on the flyer spindle2, may be traversed up and down byordinary traverse mechanisiii. -Weclaimzi 1.
