Be it known that I, JAMES B. HowLn, a citizen of the United States, residing. at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have 'invented certain new and useful Improvements vinl Punches, of which the following is a cation.
rlhis invention relates to tools, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a novel punch so constructed as to form 'a slot and tongue in the meetingterminals of a pair of pi e sections to'permit the rea/dy connection o sheet metal pipes together without the usual trouble of riveting or bolt-- ing the same.
Another object of the invention is to ro vide an improved tool which will both ormv the tongue and slot in the meeting terminals of the sheet metal pipe sections, thereby eliminating the necessityv of providing independent tools for striking out the tongue in one section and for forming the slot in the other section.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel punch for the above stated purpose,which embodies a pair of pivotally associated members each of said members having oppositely disposed jaws formed on the opposite sidesof the pivot point of said members, the pairs of `jaws carried by said members being 'so formed-as to form an out struck tongue and a slot in the 'pipe sections.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel dies carried by said jaws whereby the outstruck tongues and slots will be readily formed in the work.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel i means for adjusting the dies carried by the jaws, so that the wear on p said dies can be taken up when necessary.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel double punch of the above character, which will be durable and eicient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throu hout the several views, the letters A and indicate the companion' members of the improved unch.
The member A is preferablyformed from two - dat plates 10 and 11, each of which are T-torm and include/the dat heads 12 and the rearwardly extending shank por- 4so as to permit the head ,16 of the member B to be arranged therebetween as will be hereinafter more full ap arent as the descri tion proceeds. ese eads 12 are also hel in spaced relation by cross strips or bars 17 and 18. Each of the plates 10 and 11 have the head portions 12 thereof rovded with .inwardly extending aligned s ots 19 and 20 which terminate short ofthe -longitudinal center of the said heads. The opposite walls of the airs of slots 19 and 20 support respective y the anvil portions 21 and 22 of the slot forming device C and the tongue forming device D. These anvil ortions 21 and 22 will be hereinafter more ully described.
The companion member B includes the head 16 and arcuate bowed shank portion 23, which forms the companion handl grip for the hand rip portion 14 of the member A. As cleary shown in Figurepl of the drawings, the head 16 has extending outwardly from the opposite sides thereof the arms 24 and 25 which .carry respectively the cutting portions 26 and 27 of the slot and tongue punching implements C and D. The arms 24 and 25 are disposed on op osite sides of the axis of the head 16 so t at the cutting portions 26 and 27 of the slot cutting device C and the tongue strikingl out punch D will engage the respective anvils 21 and 22 simultaneously.
In order to normally hold the cutting portions 26 and 27 away from their anvil portions 21 and 22 ofthe slot cutting and tongue punching devices C and D, a leaf spring 30 is provided. This leaf spri 30 has formed on its inner end the attac ing plate 31 which can be inserted in suitable grooves 32 4formed in the inner faces of the handle or shank portions 13 of the plates 10 and 11. This spring 30 is bowed outwardly and engages the shank or handle portion 23 of the member B, and thus normally tends to rock the membei` B on the pivot pin 33, which connects the member B with the member A. While I have shown a leaf spring for normally holding the .cutting portion 'away from the anvil, it is to be understood that an equivalent can be used in lieu thereof.
The slot cutting' device C, as stated, includes the anvil' ortion 21 and the cutting portion 26. he anvil portion 21 consists of a flat/body plate formed of suitable material, such as tool steel, and is provided with a longitudinally extending rib 35, which fits intermediate the heads 12 of the plates 10 and 11. The edges of the body plate of the anvil 21 rest upon the walls of the slots 19, formed in the head 12 of the plates 10 and 11. The anvil can be held against movement by means of a suitable screw 36, which extends through the strip 17, and this screw 36 can also be utilized for adjusting the anvil within certain limits. Adjacent to the forward ltransverse edge of the anvil 21, an indentation or transverse groove 37 is provided for thecutting portion 26.
The cuttin portion 26 consists of a face plate 38 whic is fitted on the outer end of the arm 24 and held in a suitable screw or the l1 e 39. The inner edge of the face plate 38 is enlarged and provided with a straight cutting edge 40.
As'clearly shown in Figure 1 of the draw? ings, the outer face of the arm 24 can be bevelled to receive the enlarged end of the said base plate 38.
The extreme forward endof the anvil 21 is curved arcuately as at 21 in order to permit the same to conform to the curvature of a pipe which is to be cut, and the same will form a com lete rest for the entire surface of the pipe ing cut.
The tongue cuttin device D includes, as heretobefore stated, t e anvil portion 22 and the cuttin portion 27, and theseortions are carrie respectively' by the hea s 12 of the plates 10 and 11 of the member A and by the arm 25 of the head 16 of the member B. The anvil 22 is formed similar to the anvil21 and includes a fiat plate having an enlarged longitudinally extending rib 41 which fits intermediate the heads 12. The opposite longitudinal edges ofthe fiat plate or body ortion of the anvil fit upon the walls of t e slots 20 which are opposite the walls of the slots k19 on 'which the anvil 21 is placed. This anvil 22 can be held in place by means of the screw 22 which is extended through the strip or bar 18 and it can be seen that by turning the screw 42, the anvil 22 can be adjusted within certain limits. The active face of the anvil 22 is provided ith a recess 43, the inner wall of which i bevelled or inclined as at 44 to form a guide for the tongue being struck and cut out.
The cutting portion 27v of the tongue cutting and striking out device C includes a pair of right angularly extending base lace by means of plates 45 and 46 which are fitted in suitable i rabbeted portions of the outer end and inner face of the arm 25. As shown, the cutting portion 27 is removably held in lace by means of a suitable screw or the ike 47. The plate 27 is provided with a raised inclined substantially semi-circular shaped cuttin surface 48 which forms means for stamping and cutting out the ton ues. It
is preferred that the substantial y semi-- circular cutting portion 48 have its inner face depressed as at 49. As clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, this semicircular cutting knife 48 inclines inwardly toward the head portion 16. v
In FigureV 1 of the drawings is shown the improved tool in use on a pipe section E and the tool is placed in position so that,v one end ofthe p1 e section will rest 1n they A:rasage-1e y slots 19. This wi position the anvil 21 on the inside of the pipe, with the curved edge 21 in en a ement therewith. When pressure is applie to the hand grips 14 and 23, the sharpened end 40 of the cutting portion 26 will be brought into forcible engagement with the pipe section and thus cut a straight slot 50 therein. Owing to the inclined surface of the depression 37, the force of the metal will be pushed inwardly as indicated b the reference character 5l. @n one side o the pipe section E is shown the slot already formed. v

ln formin the struck out tongues 52 in the pipe section F, the pipe section is placed in the slot 20 with the anvil portion 22 in engagement with the outer surface of the ipe, after which ressure is applled to the liand grips 14 @$23 which wi l bring the cutting edge 48 into engagement with the pipe and strike out the ton ue 52 therefrom. Owing to the inclination o lthe cutting edge d8 and the inclined anvil 22, the tongue will be struck outwardly at an incline as clearly shown in Figures 2 andl 7 oit' the drawings.

In Figure 7 of the drawings is shown the pipe sections E and F in their assembled position, showing the manner in which the tongues 52 protrude through the slots 50.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that an improved tool has been provided which will eii'ectively cut both slots and tongues in opposite sections of'sheet metal pipes for facilitating the connection thereof.

A single tool for forming Slots and tongues in sheet metal pipes comprising a pair of companion members, each ot said members including a head, means pivotally connecting the heads together, oppositely disposed -outwardly extending jaws formed on each side of each head, andcooperatin'g dies including adjustable anvils, and cutting and punching devices carried by the opposite faces of said jaws.

A single tool for cutting slots for punching out tongues in sheet metal work comprising a pair of companion members each including heads, means pivotally connectin the heads together, an anvil plate carrie by ,one of said heads having a transverse groove formed therein, the groove being provlded with an inclined rest wall a slot cutting die carried by the other head having an inclined face arranged to engage the said rest wall, the forward edge of said anvil plate being curved arcuately, as and for the purpose specied. i

In a tool for cutting slots and striking out tongues in sheet metal work comprising rac a pair of companion members each ineluding a head, means pivotally connectn the heads together, an anvil plate carrie by one head including a face plate having an inclined rest wall, a tongue unching die carried by the other head inc uding a pair of angular related face plates and a semicircular cutting head, said semi-circular cutting head bemg disposed at an incline and arranged to engage said inclined rest wall, 1o and spring means holding the handle and punch cutting die in spaced relation.
