Description

B. FANTA.
Lamps. N0 148,683, v l `Patented March 17, 1874.
WITNESSES INVENTUR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD FANTA, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,683, dated March 17, 1874; application filed January 5, 1874.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD FANTA, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Lamp, of which the following is a specification The invention will rst be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations, partly in section; and Fig. 3, a horizontal section.
A represents the ordinary oil-reservoir of a kerosene or petroleum lamp, and A the neck, by which it is connected with the base B. I construct the latter of hollow metal, in which is placed a weight, and which is spread sufficiently to form a broad base, that will require the center of gravity to be moved some distance before it reaches the outside thereof. As, however, a simple extension of the bottom would make an unsightly clumsy appearance, I draw in the shell from the greatest circumference of outline at b, and bring it to a minimum outline at b', thus giving the preferably curved and rounded configuration, while I attach to the side a projecting iiange, C, which prevents the effect of an overturn by catching upon the table or other subjacent article, just after the center of gravity has passed beyond the base. This creates a reaction and rebound that throws the lamp back, and causes it to regain its equilibrium, or affords the person who has caused the accident time to seize it before damage is done.
My lamp is constructed and weighted, so that when the exterior perimeter of the lian ge touches the plane on which the lamp rests the line of specic gravity will stillfall within that periphery, and the lamp will restore itself to its normal condition. rIhe object of the polygonal periphery is to check momentum more decidely than would be done by the tangential point of a curved periphery, and also to prevent the lamp from rolling, and consequently falling, from the plane of its support, as a shelf or table.
Having thus described my invention, whatV I claim is- As an article of manufacture, a kerosene or petroleum lamp having the `weighted sheetmetal base B, converging from b to b',A and provided With the iiange C having a polygonal periphery suspended above the plane, which supports the base of the lamp, as, and for the purpose specified.
BERNARD FANTA. Witnesses:
