WILIBUR E. RYAN, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
FILE-CABINET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILBUR E. RYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F ileCabinets, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in file cabinets, under the general classification of furniture, and is designed especially as an account register.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a file cabinet, adapted for use in stores, in which account books may be held.
The construction and arrangement of the cabinet and its cases insure accessibility and convenience in handling the device, while the units or cases in which the account books are contained are portable, and provide a simple but comprehensive system of handling the books.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as illustrated in the drawings and as clearly set forth in the accompanying specification and claim.
In the drawings I have illustrated an exemplifying structure constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the file cabinet, showing one case or unit in place. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of Fig. 1 on line 33 with a cover over the cabinet. Fig. 41 is a transverse section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the cabinet cover. Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of one of the cases or units; Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a unit; Fig. 8 is a front elevation of a unit; and Fig. 9 is a vertical sectional view" of one of the units.
In the actual embodiment of my invention the device may be constructed of various and suitable sizes.
In the preferred embodiment as illustrated in the accompanying drawings the device is intended to be used on a desk or floor stand.
The several parts of the device are pref erably of sheet metal, as steel, which insures strength, durability and lightness, and the separate parts, as for instance the units or book cases are made of a standarduniform- Specification of Letters Patent.

ity so that the capacity of the device may be varied, by enlarging or decreasing the size of the cabinet or case holder.
The cabinet or case holder is formed with a base ring 1, preferably open at the center where are located and secured the cross braces or spider 2, and at its outer periphery the base is formed with a depending flange 3. The ends of the two lowermost cross bars of the spider 2 are turned under to form feet at for the support of the cabinet, and a post 5 is secured by nuts 6 in the spider and rises centrally of the cabinet therefrom. A superstructure or cabinet 7 of frusto-pyramid form is imposed upon the base 1, and while I have illustrated the cabinet as having an octagonal shape, it will be understood of course that the number of faces 9 may be varied as desired.
At the base of each face of the cabinet is arranged a metallic flange 10 which by its construct-ion provides a retaining recess, and located near the top of each face is a centrally positioned hook 11. These recesses and hooks are the complementary connecting means, respectively, for the pointed end 12 and perforation 18 in the unit or case 14. Each case or unit is provided with a series of angularly disposed partitions 15 forming a number of pockets adapted to receive and hold account books. The accountbooks are placed in the pockets of the cases, and the cases attached to the octagonal stand or cabinet by inserting the pointed lower end of the case into the recess inside the flange 10 and hooking the perforation 13 over the hook 12. The cabinet may be rotated on the post 5, the upper cross bar 2 of the spider providing a direct support for the rotation of the cabinet. A conical metallic cover 16 provided with a handle knob 17 may be used to protect the books, and when placed in position over the cabinet may be secured by fasten- Or if desired it will be understood that the individual cases with the account books therein may be stored away for safety, for instance in a safe or vault, and replaced in the cabinet when desired.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be evident that I have provided a device of this character which fulfils all the requirements of a comparatively perfect file cabinet.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a spider and rotatable base, of a support provided with a plurality of rearwardly inclined faces arranged about a center, a retaining flange secured at the lower end of each face forming a V-shaped recess, a hook near the upper end of each face, and a casehaving a perforation to engage a hook and formed with a pointed lower end to rest in said recess.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
