Description

March 11, 1924. v 1,486,811
c. B. STRANG S I CKLE HEAD Filed Aug. 29 1921 v I 2 42 2v 22:1823 1 2o 7 CHARLES BENTON STBANG, OF LINDENWOOD, ILLINOIS.
SICKLE HEAD.
Application filed August 29, 1921. Serial No. 496,623.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that Gnannns BENTON S'IRAHG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Linoenwood, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, has invented new and useful Improvements in Sickle Heads, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and elficient construction of sickle adapted for universal adjustment to suit the relative positions and longitudinal and transverse angular adjustments of the sickle and finger bars, the pitman and related elements to insure a proper communication of mot on to the sickle head and hence to the sick e bar with the minxnum of frictional re sistance and the liability of disarrangement 'n operation; and with these objects in view he invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure .1 is a rear view of a sickle head embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a detail View in perspective of the journal block.
Figure 4 is a similar view of the link by which the pitman is connected with the journal block.
The sickle head 10 carries a universally mounted journal block 11 having a longitudinal axis of movement, and mounted on the block with a transverse axis of movement is a link 12 forming a connecting between the block and a clip 13 which is adapted for attachment to a pitman rod 1 iby which reciprocatory movement is communicated to the sickle head, said clip having a vertical axis of movement by means of the pivot bolt 15 with relation to the link, or an axis of movement which is perpendicular to the axis of movement of the link with relation to the journal block.
In the construction illustrated the sickle head is provided with studs 16 in which are threaded the center screws 17 having center point bearings 18 for engagement with sockets 19 in the parallel diametrically opposite surfaces of the journal block, jamb nuts 20 being fitted upon the center screws for locking them in their adjusted positions. Correspondingly center screws 21 are extended through bearing eyes 22 in the spaced parallel arms 12 of the looped link 12 and are provided with center points 23 engaging sockets 24E also in the opposite sides of the journal block in a plane perpendicular to that of the sockets 19, while carried by the journal block in communication with the said sockets is an oil cup 25.
The inner end of the link beyond the eyes 22 is upturned to form a looped guard finger 26 adapted to protect the oil cup and swing freely over the same when the angular relation of the link with the head is varied.
This arrangement of parts provides for a longitudinal and transverse tilting movement of the sickle head with relation to the link while the link is free for swinging movement forwardly and rearwardly with relation to the pitman to provide for any desired or possible adjustments of the finger bar without varying the efficiency of the transmission of motion from the pitman to the sickle head.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is z 1. A sickle head carrying a journal block, a pitman engaging clip, and a link connecting the clip with the journal block, the j ournal block having a longitudinal axis of movement on the pitman head, and the link having a transverse axis of movement with relation to the journal block and having a pivotal connection with the said clip with the axis of said movement in a plane perpendicular to the axis of movement with respect to the block, the link being of looped construction arranged in straddling relation with the block.
2. A sickle head carrying a journal block, a pitman engaging clip, and a link connecting the clip with the journal block, the journal block having a longitudinal axis of movement on the pitman head, and the link having a transverse axis of movement with relation to the journal block and having a pivotal connection with the said clip with the axis of said movement in a plane perpendicular to the axis of movement with respect to the block, the link being of looped construction arranged in straddling relation with the block, and provided at its inner end with an upwardly directed looped guard fin er.
3 A sickle head carrying a journal block, a pitman engaging clip, and a link connectingthe clip with the journal block, the journal block having a longitudinal axis of movement on the pitman head, and the link having a transverse axis of movement with relation to the journal block and having a pivotal connection with the said clip with the axis'of said movement in a plane perpendicular to the axis of movement With respect to the block, the link being of looped form and arranged in straddling relation with the block and center screws being eX tended through eyes in the sides of the loop for engagement with center sockets in the block.
In testimony whereof he affixes his signature.
CHARLES BENTON STRANG.
