ADJUSTABLE DlTCH-CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of lLetters Patent No. 272,087, dated February 13, 1883.
Application led November 3, 1882. (No model.) n
To allvwhom 'it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, JOHN R. ROTHMANQof Canton, in the county of Fulton, in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Adjustable Ditch-Gleaner, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, iu which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in which the figure represents a perspective view of the same.
The object of this invention is the construction of a ditch-cleaner that by a simple and easy adjustment may be used for scraping, hoeing, shoveling, or spading.
My invention consists essentially of a metalV plate or blade having two forked rods pivoted thereto, one of which is rigid to the handle and the other swiveled to a collar adjustable to different positionsupon said handle, wheret by said plate or blade can beheld at different E and D.
angles relative to the handle.
The plate or blade A of my ditch-cleaner I make with two opposite sides, A', bent up to ears to which to. attach the forked holding-rods The end E of the forked rod E is inserted and fastened into the end of the'handle C, while the forked ends are bent into hooks and caught into the eyes or openings O 0, made through the sides A A. 'Ihe forked rod D in like manner has its forked ends bent and hooked into eyes O O', made, as shown, through the sides A' A of the blade A; but' This serves the double purpose of retain-A ing the dirt upon it and of taking the place of the end D of said forked rod D is `bent into an eye or hook and held by the eye H of the collar F. Said collar F, being fitted to slide along the handle C, is rmly retained at any desired point thereon by meansrof a set-screw, G, as, shown in the drawing, or hy means of a wedge or cam.
To use this implement as a hoe, the-collar F is slid toward the lower end of the handle C until the plate A is at almost right angles therewith. When used for shoveling, said coli lar is moved away from the end until said plate A is nearly parallel with the handle. A medium position like that shown in the drawing is the one at'which this implement is most generally used for the purpose ofditch-cleaning.
What I claim for my patent is as follows:
l. Thehandle (J, having forked bar E, in combination with the plate A, forked rod D, and collar F, having eye H, and a device for securing said collar at various points along said handle C, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The handle G and forked rod E, in combination with the plate A, having vertical sides A A', forked rod D, and collar F,`having eye H and set-screw G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 4
In testimony that I claim the foregoing invent-ion I have hereunto'set my hand this 7th day of October, 1882.
JOHN R. RO'IHMAN.
