PATNT .rica
WALLACE R. BROWN', OF CLEAN, NEW YORK.`
KNIFE.
Application led February 3, 1923. Serial No. 616,744.
i kTo all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, WALLACE R. Bno'wiv, a citizen of theUnited.l States of America, and a resident of` Olean, yin the county of Cattaraugus andState 'of New York, have "invented a new land Improved Knife, of
which the following is a description.
My invention relates to'clasp knives and more .particularly relates to a knife the blade of which is pivotally carried by a sheath swingable into or out of the knife handle for the positioning` of the blade for use or for the sheathing of the blade when the knife is not required foruse.
The invention especially relates to novel locking means adapted both to hold the knife in the handle in the completely closed.`
position of theV knife or to engage an l hold the blade projecting at an end of the handle.
The nature o-f the invention, its distinguishing features and advantages will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a knife embodying my invention showing the same in the closed position;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the knife with the sheath swung outwardly from the handle, the blade being shown in the sheath;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the blade swung out of the sheath. and the sheath swung out of the handle preparatory to positioning and locking the blade for use;
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the knife with the blade positioned for use and locked;
Figure 5 is a back view of the knife in the closed condition of Figure 1; j
Figures 6, 7 and 8 are transverse sections on the lines 6-6, 7-7- and 8--8, respectively.
In carrying out my invention in practice any approved des-ign may be provided, said handle adapted to receive a sheath 11 pivoted thereto at one end as at 12 so that the sheath may be swung into the handle or out of the same. A blade 13 is pivoted as at 14 tothe sheath near the free end and is adapted to fold into the sheath or to `be swung out of the same, said sheath being U-shaped in cross section.
On the blade 13 at one side ledge near the pivoted end is a laterally projecting lug 15 adapted to protrude through a slot 16 in the back 18 of the sheath 11, said lug having `a notch 17 for engagement with the back 18 at an end of the slot 16. The slot 17 Vhas another function also in that it is adapted for engagement for a U-shaped locking bail 19 pivoted to the handle 10 at that end opposite the pivot 12 of the sheath. The bail 19 at the bend thereof has at one edge a projecting lip 21 which is adapted to have engagement in the slot 17 when the knife blade 13 is positioned atY an end of the handle for use. j' Y j With the described construction when the sheath with the blade therein is swiung into the closed position ,into the handle 10, the bail 19 may be swung on its pivot 2() over the back of the sheath to hold the sheath against accidental outward swinging, whereby the knife is securely maintained closed. When the knife is to be used the bail 19 is swung away from the sheath leaving the sheath free to be swung on its pivot 21 out of the handle 10, as for example to the position shown in Figures 2 and 3. The blade 13 is then swung out of the sheath 1'1 to position in line with the sheath as Figure 3. The sheath 11 with the blade 13 extending at an end thereof in Figure 3 is now swung on the pivot 12 into the handle 10 so that the knife will project at that end of the handle having the bail 19 as illustrated in Figure 4. The bail 19 is now moved to a position for its latch lip 21 to enter the notch 17 in the lug 15 of blade 13. Hence, said blade cannot swing on its pivot 14.
lVith the knife blade as shown in Figure 4, the sheath 11 with the blade 13 thereon must be swung on the pivot 12 in ar direction away from the lip 21 and it will be seen with respect to Figure 4 that the lip 21 when engaged in the slot 17 of the blade prevents movement of the sheath about the pivot 12 as. an axis. Thus, it will he seen that the one locking bail 19 serves to secure the knife in the closed position as well as serving to hold the blade in the open position for use.
The lip 22 is formed on the hail 19 at approximately right angles to the lip 21 and serves as a finger-hold in swinging the bail on its pivot 20.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied Without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, claim:
l. A knife of the class described comprising a handle, a sheath pivoted thereto to swing into or out of the handle, a blade pivoted to the sheath near one end to fold into the sheath or to swing outward in line With the sheath, and means von the handle to hold the sheath in the folded position with the blade closed or to engage the blade and hold the same in the open position, said means comprising a bail, the bail having a locking lip and said blade having a notch to receive said lip When the blade is in the open position and the sheath folded into the handle, the bail being swingable over the back of the sheath when the blade is folded into sheath and the sheath folded into the handle.
2. A knife of the class described comprising a handle, a sheath swingable into or out of the handle, a blade pivoted to the sheath adjacent the free end thereof, a lateral lug therein, and a bail on the handle at the 'endY opposite the sheath pivot, said bail having a lip adapted to engage` into said notchV of the blade when the blade is in position for use, said bail being swingable over the back of the sheath When the blade is in the closed position of the sheath and the said sheath folded in the handle.
3. A knife of the class described comprising a handle, a sheath swingable into or out of the handle, a blade pivoted to the sheath adjacent the free end thereof, a lateral lug on the knife at a side edge thereof near the pivot of the blade, said lug having a notch therein, and a bail on the handle'at the end opposite the sheath pivot, said bail having a lip adapted to engage into said notch of the blade When the blade is in position forV use, said bail being swingable over the back of the sheath when the blade Yis in the closed position of the sheath and the said sheath' W.
