CHAIN LOCK.
Application filed October 28, 1921. Serial No. 511,085.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lno J. WAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Jo Daviess and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Chainv Look, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a chain lock and has for its principal objectto provide simple and efiicient means for holding the two ends of a longitudinal chain of an anti-skid chain together.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which will remain in a locked position until. opened by means of a screw driver or some such other similar implement.
In the drawing Figure l is an elevation of the device,
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the device in an open position, i g
Figure 3 isan elevation of the inner section of the device,
Figure a is a transverse section through the device taken on the line l4; of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrow,
Figure 5 is a view similar to that disclosed in Figure 1 showing an elevation of the other side of the device, and.
Figures 6 and 7 are detailed views of the outer member of the device.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that 1 designates a pin which in practice will be a portion of the end link of the longitudinal member of a non-skid chain and upon this pin is situated in spaced relation to each other a pair of fixed washer elements 2. An inner member 3 provided adjacent one end with the aperture 4: is pivotally mounted on the pin 1 between the washers 2. The major portion of this inner member 3 is reduced so as to be thinner than its other portion and this reduced portion includes the fulcrumed end of the inner member which is provided with a curved face 6 terminating in the shoulder 7. Adjacent the other end of the inner member 3 there is provided a plurality of transversely extending notches 8 which are adapted to engage the other extremity of the longitudinal member of a non-skid chain. The outer member disclosed to advantage in Figures 6 and 7 is formed preferably from resilient metal and is indicated generally at 9. This outer member consists of a pair of side plates 10 and 11 which are connected at one end but are sufliciently spaced from each other so as to receive the reduced portion of the inner member A spring element 12 is formed by the angular extension from one of the longitudinal edges of theplate 11 and overlaps the longitudinal edge of the plate 10. Each plate is provided with a pivoting aperture for receiving the pin 1 the aperture in the plate 10 being substantially round as indicated at 14 while the aperture n the plate 11. is elliptical shape or oblong as indicated at 15. hen the device is in a closed position as shown in Figures 1 and 5, 1t wlll be noted that the shoulder 7' is in engagement with. the spring extension 12 so as to hold the inner and outersection in a I locked position. A shoulder 16 is also .provlded on the rounded face 17 of the plate 10 which is adapted to be engaged bv the shoulder 18 formed at the terminalo f the enlarged portion adjacent the rounded edge 6 when the device is in an open position. The plate 11 is also'provided with a projection or shoulder 20 that engages the shoulder 21 on the inner section 3 as indicated to advantage in Figure 5.
The platell is provided with a notch 22 so that the blade of a screw driver may be placed therein and twisted whereby the plate 11 may be moved sufliciently so as to allow the shoulder 20 to clear the shoulder 21 and the spring extension 12 to clear the shoulder '7 whereby the device may be moved to an open position.
The above description and the accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it will be understood that many changes in form, proportion, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. In combination, a pivot, an inner section pivoted on the pivot, an outer section comprising a pair of spaced plates connected at one end and fulcrumed on the pivot at their other ends, a spring extension formed on one longitudinal edge of one of the plates so as to extend over the longitudinal edge of the other plate and a shoulder formed on the pivoted end of the inner section for engagement with the spring extension.
2. In combination, a p o an inner section pivoted on the pivot, an outer section comprising a pair of spaced plates connected at one end and fulcrumed on the pivot at their other ends, a spring extension formed on one longitudinal edge of one of the plates so as to extend over the longitudinal edge of the other plate, a shoulder formed on the pivoted end of the inner section for engagement with the spring extension, and said plate having the spring extension being provided on its other longitudinal edge with a notch so that an implement may be engaged therewith in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In combination, a pivot, an inner member fulcrumed at one end on the pivot, an outer member including a pair of spaced plates connected together at one end and fulcrumed on the pivot at. their other ends so as to receive the inner-section therebetween, a spring extension mounted on one of the plates, a shoulder formed on the i'ul'crumed end of the inner section for engagement with the spring extension, a. second shoulder formed on the inner sectiomand a third shoulder formed on the plate having the spring extension for engagement with the second shoulder.
4. In combination, a pivot, an inner section fulcrumed thereon, an outer section fulcrumed on the pivot, said inner section provided with a shoulder at its pivoted end, said outer section includii'ig a pair of spaced plates connected at their tree ends and provided with apertures at their tulcrumed ends for receiving the pivot, and a spring member mounted on one of the plates so as to be engageable with the shoulder of the inner section, the aperture in the plate supporting the spring member being elongated so that this plate may be moved in relation to the pivot so as to release the spring member from engagement with the shoulder.
5. In combination, a pivot, an inner section fulcrumed on the pivot, an outer section fulcrumed on the pivot, said outer section being substantially U-shaped in cross section for receiving the inner section, said inner section provided with a shoulder at its fulcrumed end, and a spring member on the outer section for engagement with the shoulder so as to hold the sections in closed position.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEO J. XVAND.
