COMBINATION KNIFE AND AX.
Specification of Letters Patent. 1 31391313961 May 3Q), 1916,
Application filed. November 30, 1915. Serial No. 64,304.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. SEELYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Combination Knife and AX, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is a combination tool, comprising an ax and knife, whereby the implement may be used by hunters and others either as an ax or a knife, whichever is desired or necessary and with the use of a single implement only.
It is the object of the invention to provide a novel and improved combination knife and aX, which may be readily carried, which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, and which is thoroughly practical and efficient in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the implement used as an aX or hatchet. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail of Fig. 1, a portion of the blade being broken away. Fig.3 is a side elevation of the implement as used as a knife, portions being broken away. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3 with the locking means released. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail of the latch.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an elongated member or bar 1 constructed of suitable metal, one half or end portion of which is formed into a knife blade 2, and the other half or end portion of which is formed into a helve 3 of the ax or hatchet. Said helve 3 has a head 4 at its free end provided in one edge with a groove 5 receiving the butt end of the ax blade 6. The head 4 is provided with a bore 7 eX tending from the groove 5 and receiving the shank 8 of the blade 6, and'a set screw 9 is threaded into the head 4 to clamp the shank 8 in place. The blade 6 can be readily applied to and removed from the head 4, and the blade 6 in fitting in the groove 5 will prevent the blade from swinging relative to the helve 3 when the axblade is applied to the head.
In. connection with the member 1 there is employed a handle 10 formed from a doubled strip or plate, and the terminals of the doubled handle 10 are pivoted by means of a rivet or other pivot element 11 to the central portion of the member 1 between the blade 2 and helve 3, whereby either the blade or helve can be swung within the handle while the other projects longitudinally therefrom, the handle being adapted to house that portion of the member 1 which is not in use.
In order to finish the handle, spacing members 12 of pearl, wood or other suitable mathe blade 2 or helve 3 within the handle,
and to this end, an inwardly projecting pin 18 is secured to the leaf 15 and is movable through apertures 19 provided in the limbs or side members of the handle 10, the blade 2 and helve 3 each being provided with an aperture 20 adapted to register with the apertures 19:for the reception of the pin or finger 18.
A device is employed for latching or hold-- ing the leaf 15 in place against the handle, and to this end a guide 21 formed from a plate is riveted or otherwise secured to the outer side of the leaf 15 within the section 14, and the leaf 15, guide 21 and section 14 are apertured, as at 22, for the reception of an outstanding stud 23 attached to the adj acent limb of the handle 10. The stud 23 has an annular groove 24. A spring latch 25 is slidable in the guide 21 and is provided at one end with an outturned finger piece 26 normally disposed within a finger notch 27 with which the section 14 is providedat one edge. The latch 25 has a keyhole shaped slot 28, the head of which is adapted to receive the stud 23 when said head alines with the apertures 22, so that when the latch is moved inwardly into position, the restricted or neck portion of the stud 23 will be moved into the tail of the slot 28 thereby holding the leaf in place against the handle. In order to limit the movement of the latch it is provided with an elongated slot 29, and a pin or lug attached to the guide 21 projects into the slot 29. This prevents the loss or detachment of the latch 25.
In using the device as an ax or hatchet, the knife blade 2 is swung within the handle, and is locked therein, and the aX blade 6 is then applied to the head 1, as seen in Fig. 1.
' hen the device is used as a hunting knife,
the blade 6 is detached from the helve 3, and the helve is swung within the handle and locked therein, as seen in Fig. 3. The device can be readily converted from an aX into a knife, or vice versa. In order to release that part of the member 1 within the handle, the latch 25 is pulled outwardly to bring the head of the slot 28 into alinement with the apertures 22, and this allows the leaf 15 to be swung outwardly, as seen in Fig. 4:, so that the stud 23 is withdrawn from the apertures 22 and slot 28, and at the same time the pin 18 is withdrawn from the aperture 20 of the respective part of the member 1. The member 1 can then be rotated, or the handle can be rotated to reverse the position of the parts, and then when the leaf 15 is swung back against the handle, its pin 18 will be projected through the apertures l9 and 20 for holding the handle and member 1 in place. The latch 25 is then pushed inwardly after the stud 23 is projected through the apertures 22 and slot 28, whereby the tail of the slot 28 is moved into engagement with the groove 24 of.the stud, to hold the leaf 15 in place, whereby it cannot be accidentally released.
The latch 25 is preferably curved or bent, as illustrated in Fig. 5, whereby when it is moved into engagement with the stud 23, it
serves to draw the parts tightly together to prevent loose play.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A combination tool embodying a doubled handle, a member pivoted between the terminals thereof and having oppositely projecting implements, a member hinged to one limb of the handle and having an inwardly projecting portion engageable with either implement to hold it within the handle, and means for holding said member against the handle.
2. A combination tool comprising a dou bled handle, a member pivoted between the terminals thereof and having oppositely projecting implements each provided with an aperture, a leaf hinged to one limb of the handle and having an inwardly projecting pin projectable through either of said apertures, and means for holding said leaf in place against the handle.
3. A combination tool comprising a dou bled handle, a member pivoted between the terminals thereof and having oppositely projecting implements each provided with an aperture, a leaf hinged to one limb of the handle and having an inwardly projecting pin projectable through either of said apertures, said leaf having a guide, an outstanding grooved stud carried by said limb of the handle, and a latch slidable within said guide and having a key-hole shaped slot engageable with said stud to hold the leaf against the handle. 7
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto ailixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM E. SEELYE. Witnesses:
