Description
'ETES crees e. eoLn, or MAnsIIALL, MICHIGAN.'
IMPROVEMENT IN SPECTACLE-CASES.
Specification forming part of Leiters Patent No. 148,549, dated March 17,1874; application `filed February l0, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYRUS G. COLE, of the city of Marshall, Calhoun county, and State of Michigan, have invented a llIetallie Spectacle-Gase, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in swaging ont of one piece of metal of proper form a T-shaped spectacle-case in cross-section, the same to be left open at one end for the insertion of the spectacles, and to be capped with a suitable lid or cover.
Figure l is a central cross-section of the case taken in the line :v a, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 represents the configuration of themetal before being swaged into shape.
By the use of a proper die, I design to out.
out of one piece of metal a spectacle-ease, as shown in Fig. 3, and, by the employment of other dies, swage the same into proper form, as shown in Figs. l and 2 of the accompanying drawing. There will be, of necessity, in this ease, two joints, one around the half-moon shaped end and the other on the top of the central eorrugation A. A butt-joint is preferable to a lap-joint in this style of case. The cover or lid B will be made of the same material as the case, and hin ged either at the apex of the open end of the case or on the back thereof, as shown in Fig. 2. By setting the hinge back in this manner, I have room to scallop out the back of the case, as shown at e, Fig. 3, so that the end ot' the bow may be easily gotten hold of in extracting the spectacles from the case. The lid is provided on each side with a lip, h, enlarging into an ear, d, which laps on the corrugation A when the ease is closed. This forms a fastening for the lid, and relieves the hinge from side strain.
A little solder fastened on the top of the corrngation at the open end of the case, raising it to a level with the end of the lid, provents the case being opened in the act of withdrawing it from the pocket.
The ease is to be lined on the inside with the ordinary material. j", Fig. l, shows the lining fastened to the ease.
I am aware that spectacle-cases have been made of a single piece of material; and I do not desire to claim such, broadly; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described spectaele'case, made from a single piece of inet-al, provided with a ridge for the temple-arms, scalloped and beveled at the open end, as set forth, and having this open end protected by a hanged cover, l, hinged thereat, substantially as specified.
To the above I have signed my name this 29th day of January, A. D. 1874.
CYRUS C. COLE. lVitnesses WILLIAM B. PETERS, C. T. Gooic.
