Be it known that I, Lnwis P. Cnosn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carnegie, in the county of Caddo and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Gasoline Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for gasoline tanks of motor cars and especially of Ford automobiles, and the object is to provide, in connection with a gage tube and graduated scale,certain novel means for mounting the elements specified, adjacent to the inlet connection or filling nozzle.
A further object is to provide a plate member having a vertical slot for mounting the gage tube, this plate being mounted on the side of the body of the car, opposite a cutaway portion, and having an aperture for the accommodation of the inlet connection or filling nozzle of the tank; and further to provide a holding or retaining device to be secured rigidly to the aforesaid inlet connection or tube, and adapted to co-operate with the other elements in the manner herein specified.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing, Figure 1 shows the device in front elevation; Figure 2 is a View in vertical section, with parts in side elevation, including the filling nozzle of a gasoline tank; Figure 3 is a vertical section through the gage tube and connections; Figure 4 is a detail in section, on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
A portion of the gasoline storage tank is designated 10, and a portion of the side of the body of the car is shown at 12. The filling nozzle 14 is closed by a cap 15, and this nozzle projects through an aperture 16 in the plate 17 the latter being mounted opposite a cutaway portion 19 in the side of the car, and the plate being secured by means of bolts 20.
This plate 17 is slotted vertically, the slot being designated 21, and opposite the slot a gage tube 22 is mounted, the graduations on the scale, that is on plate 17, being designated M.
A frame 25, of the form shown, is secured to plate 17 and to the outer surface of the side wall of the car, in order that the plate 17 may be retained in proper vertical position notwithstanding the configuration of the body.
The gage tube is in communication with the pipe 25 controlled by valve 26, and the pipe extends into the lower portion of the gasoline tank 10.
The direct connection between the pipe 25 and the gage tube is designated 27, and a rod 28 threaded at one end passes through the gage tube and has a threaded connection with the element 27. This rod constitutes in fact a screw, and is provided with a head 29 having a slot therein, the opposite end of the rod passing through the mounting element 32, secured to the plate 17 at the point illustrated.
The nozzle 14 includes a tapered portion 14' having the form of an elbow and this portion passes directly through the plate 17. An elbow 34 is also connected with the element 14, this member 34 also constituting an elbow and being connected with a tubular member 35 extending directly to the tank 10.
A bracket of U-form in cross section, designated 36, passes around the outer side of the gage tube and is secured to the elements 14 and 34 of the inlet connection, by means of soldering or welding.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
1. The combination with an inlet connection for a gasoline tank, of an apertured and slotted plate, through which the connection extends, a gage tube mounted opposite the slot in the plate and having connection with the tank, and a U-shaped bracket surrounding the tube and partly surrounding the inlet connection and secured to the latter.
2. The combination with an inlet connection of a gasoline tank, of a plate provided with a slot and an aperture, the plate being adapted for mounting on the side wall of the body of a vehicle, opposite the tank, said side wall having an opening covered by the plate, and an inlet connection passing through the aperture of the plate, a gage tube mounted opposite the slot in the plate, and a U-shaped bracket surrounding the gage tube and secured to the sides of the aforesaid inlet connection.
3. The combination with an inlet connection of a gasoline tank, of a plate provided with a slot and an aperture, the plate being adapted for mounting on the side Wall of the body of a vehicle, opposite the tank, said side wall having an opening covered by the plate and an inlet connection pass ing through the aperture of the plate, a gage tube mounted opposite the slot in the plate, and a Ushaped bracket surrounding the gage tube and secured tothe sides of the aforesaid inlet connection, and means for securing the plate to a body of a vehicle, said means lest named including a U-shaped frame proportioned and mounted to support the plate in a. vertical position on the slop ing body of the vehicle.
