OILING DEVICE.

Be it known that I, FREDERICK Manner, a citizen of the United "States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State ot' New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oiling Devices,'of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an oiling device for motor vehicles and the like, the general object of the invention being to keep the oil in the crank case at a constant level by providing a reservoir with automatic feeding means for delivering the oil in the reservoir to the crank case.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the movement of the vehicle will not interfere with the proper working of the automatic feeding means.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the sev eral views, and in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view showing the invention in use upon an automobile.
The remaining figures are detail views.
In these views 1 indicates a tank for containing a supply of oil and which ma be located on the dash of the vehicle. his tank is provided with the usual sight gage 2 and the filling opening 3, closed by a cap 4 in such a manner as to make an air tight connection to prevent any air from getting into the tank after the same has been closed. The outlet 5 of said tank is closed by a valve 6 when the cover 4 is removed as said valve is located on a rod 7, pivotally supported on a bracket 8 in the tank and which is moved downwardly to place the valve 6 on its seat on the outlet by a spring 9. This rod is held in raised position with the valve off its seat by a rod 10, carried by the cover, when the cover is in position closing the opening 3. As soon as the cover is removed the spring will draw the rod 7 downwardly and place the valve upon its seat, thus preventing the flow of oil from the tank while the opening 3 is uncovered. The tank may be supported by the straps 11 which are adjustable so as to permit adjustment of the tank on the dash.
A pipe 12 is connected with the outlet 5 by the coupl1ng 13 and this'pipe extends into the cylinder 14 which has a tube 15 connected with its bottom which extends into the crank case 16 and has secured thereto a plate 17 which is adapted to be secured to the crank case to cover the hole through which the tube 15 extends. Suitable means are provided to make an oil tight connection between said plate and crank case. This plate acts to support the cylinder 14 upon the crank case. A small cylinder 18 is connected with the inner end of the tube 15 and is located in, the crank case with its upper end located above the normal oil level of the case. A screen 19 covers the end of said cylinder so as. to strain the oil thrown into the cylinder by the movement of the crank case. A small opening 20 is made in the bottom of the cylinder 18, this opening being of such a size as to make the oil level in the cylinder 14 approximately the same as the oil level in the crank case, it being understood th-at some of the oil passing into the cylinder 18 will pass through the tube 15 into the cylinder 14. The end of the pipe 12 which is locatedin the cylinder 1 1 is cut away at one side, as at 21, and this side of the pipe is provided witha projection 22 which will engage the wall of the cylinder 14: and thus hold the open end of the pipe away from said wall. The upper end of the cylinder 14 is closed by a hood 23 which has its upper restricted end secured to the pipe 12 by the set screw 24.
From the above it will be seen that as soon as the oil level in the cylinder 14 drops below the opening in pipe 12 air will enter said pipe and pass into the tank 1, breaking the vacuum therein and permitting some of the oil therein to flow down the pipe 12 into the cylinder and thus pass into the crank case to raise the level of oil therein. This feeding action will continue until the end of the ipe 12 is again covered so that the feeding of oil from tank 1 is automatic and the oil level in the crank case will remain constant as long as the tank 1 contains oil. The cylinder 18 will act as an equalizer for preventing the movement of the vehicle along a road from efi'ecting the oil level in the cylinder 14. The equalizer with the restricted tube 15 and the small opening 20 will act to permit the oil level in cylinder 14 to raise when the motor is in operation, due to the s lashing of the oil into the cylinder 18, t u preventing the feeding of the oil by the vehicle passing over unlevel surfaces. The valve 6 and its associated parts will prevent the oil in the tank 1 from flowin into the crank case when tank 1 is being re lled, or when the crank case is being emptied.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of in invention will be readily a parent.

What I claim is An oiling attachment for the crank case of a motor comprising a cylinder having its bottom connected with the interior of the projection on the pipe for holding the notched end thereof away from the walls of the cylinder, a hood on the pipe covering the upper end of the cylinder, a su ply tank connected with the upper end p the pipe, an open top cylinder arranged 1n the crank case and being provided with an opening in its bottom to cause the oil level in the crank case to be approximately the same hei ht of the oil level 1n the first mentioned cy inder, a pipe establishing communication between the cylinders and a screen covering the open end of the last mentioned 0 linder.
