Description
Patented Feb. 19, 1924.
BUCK C. THOMAS, 033 SI-IIRO, TEXAS.
BOX CLOSURE.
Applieationcfiled May 23, 1923.
To a-ll whom it may concern:
Be itknown that'I; Boon C. THOMAS, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Shire, in the county ofGrime-s and State of Texas, have invented certain'new and the cover after its initial removal cannot be conveniently replaced or used to protect the contents of the box which are thus left exposed to dirt, flies and insects if the goods are sold from the original containers.
The present invention seeks to utilize the box cover or closure as a protecting means when closed so as to comprise a sanitary container for the contents of the receptacle, while when opened the cover is supported in such position as to provide means for the display of samples of the contents or advertising cards. The invention also provides means by which the cover is pivotally mounted between the opposite side walls and when closed for shipment or handling a bracing clip is provided at the joint between the cover and box wall to relieve the strain upon the pivots and effect a tight and rigid closure for the receptacle.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims In the drawing 2-- Figure l is a perspective of the invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical section therethrough;
Figure 3 is a similar view on line 3-3 of Figure 2; and V Figure 4c is a detail perspective of the bracing clip.
Like numerals refer to like parts on the several figures of the drawing.
The box or container may be of any desired size or configuration and is herein shown as comprising the front wall 10 and rear wall 11 connected by the opposite side walls 12 and 13 and the bottom 14. The cover or closure 15 for the box is provided Serial No 640,982.
*ith an angular flange 16 extending substantially for the width thereof and pivotally mounted in the side walls 12 and 13 by means of pivot pins 17 extending through said walls. These pins may he of any desired character and comprise practically the usual fastening devices such as nails. The fiangelG is connected to the cover 15 in any desired manner, as by the fastening nails 18; The free edge of this flange is provided with a beveled face 19 which cooperates with a similar. face 20 at the upper portion of the rear wall 11, thus forming a tight closure between these'members when the cover is in closed position. This bevel joint also forms a stop to limit the pivotal movement of the cover in either direction and supports the cover in its open position, shown in Figures 1 and 2. as the rear wall of the flange therein rests upon the upper edge of the beveled face 20. In this position the outer face 21 of the flange forms a support upon which samples of the contents of the container may be dis- Q played, while suitable advertising matter may be also supported against the open cover.
Vhen the cover is closed for shipment or handling of the receptacle, its pivotal edge is only supported by the opposite pivot pins and in order to strengthen this edge a bracing clip 22 is provided which is formed with angular sharpened ends 23 adapted to be driven into the material of the box in such position that the body of the clip will cover the joint between the flange and rear wall. The free edge of the cover may be then secured in any desired manner, for instance by means of fastening devices as shown at 24.
The operation of the invention will be obvious from the foregoing description, and it will be seen that in opening the box the securing means 24 are first removed and also the bracing clip 22 which permits the cover to swing backward upon its pivots. The invention provides for the construction of the box at approximately the cost of the usual nailed-011 cover, and provides a receptacle in which the contents may be protected while on sale and a convenient container for other uses after the box has been emptied. of its original contents. By providing the bevel joint between the cover flange and rear wall, the strain is removed from the cover when the same is in open or closed position, and the closure may be pivotally mounted by a very simple construction obviating the use of the usual hinge.
It will be seen that the invention is a plicable to boxes or containers of different characters and is not necessarily confined to the specific construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A box having side walls and a rear wall of less height, a cover provided with an angular flange at one edge to form a closure with said rear wall, and pivot pins for said flange extending through the opposite side walls.
2, A box having a cover provided with a flange at one edge, pivot pins for said flange extending through the opposite box walls, and a bracing clip extending over the joint between said flange and its cooperating box wall.
3. A box having a rear wall provided with a beveled upper edge, a cover member pivoted between the side walls of said box and provided with an angular flange having a cooperating beveled wall to engage the wall of the box.
4. A box having a rear wall provided with a beveled upper edge, a cover member pivoted between the side walls of said box and provided with an angular flange having a cooperating beveled wall to engage the wall of the box, and an angular clip disposed to connect said flange and rear alls and having angular ends adapted to enter the same.
5. A box having a cover provided with an angular flange at one end having a beveled free edge adapted to engage a cooperating face of the rear wall oi the box, pivot pins extending through the side walls of the box and entering said flange, and means for connecting said flange and the rear wall of the box when the cover is closed In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
