Description
Patented Feb. 19, 1924.
THOMAS BERRY ALLI'C-D, OFYCOVENTRY, ENGLAND.
CLIP FR ATTACHING- ARTICLES 0F WEARIG APPAREL.
Application lied. August 31, 1923. Serial No. 660,334.
To all coli-om t may concern.
Be it known that "I, THOMAS BERRY AL- Li'r'i, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 89 Holyhead Road, Coventry, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clips for Attaching Articles of Wearing Apparel, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention isto provide an improved and eflicient form of clip for attaching, or for connecting together, articles of wearing apparel or parts thereof, such for example as securin ribbons to lingerie, to admit of their rea y removal for washing or other purposes, the improved clip being neat in appearance and unobtrusive in use.
The improved clip comprises essentially two sheet metal members of an open-ended channel or trough formation, arranged with their concave or inwardly-bent faces y towards one another, and having their longitudinal edges curled inwards or formed with an inwardly extending beading, the edges or sides of the one member being adapted to be engaged between the edges or sides of the otherV member, so that the pieces of material to be connected together are thereby clipped between the two members.
VFigure 4 shows the two members of 'thek clip separated.
Figure 5 is a cross section on the line 5 5, Figure 3 upon a larger scale.
Figure 6 is a sectional view showing the manner in which the material is placed'overv the one member of the clip', prior to the engagement of the other member therewith. y
The same reference numerals indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures.V
Referring to the drawings, the improved clip, as described for securing the shoulder ribbons to lcamisoles, comprises two sheet metal members l and 2 of an open-ended Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings i channel or trough-formation, the edges of the upturned sidesof the member l being curled inwards. to form-a beading 3, whilst Vthe corresponding edges :of the 'othei'ime'mber 2 are curled inwards into a beading 4.
The two members aredisposed so that when engaged together their concave or inwardlybent faces arepresented towards one another, the member 2 being narrower than the member l and being arranged so that its sides snap orl spring between the curledover edges of thela-tter, the two members l and 2 being thereby detachably retained together, as shown in Figure 3. The bottom ofi the wider member 1 is preferably v flat, its sides being bent up at equal `angles to they bottom and theedges of the sides -in-v wardly cu-rled to form the beadings 3, as shown.. The narrower member 2, on the other hand, is preferablyof a shallow C-section,
with its edges inwardly curled into headings n 4, asabove described. This C-formation imparts an increased resilience to the sides so that a very efficient spring action is obtained, the'said sides springing` together when they are engaged between the sides of the wider member 1 and then expanding outwards behind the beading 3 formed by the curled in edges of the latter. y l
In use the end of the ribbon 5 and the edge 6 of the camisole are laid over 'the concave face and curled-in edges 3 of the wider member l of the clip or fastener when the narrowerclip member 2 is placed over the material` with its concave face downwards,
immediately above the other clip member,-
as shown in Figure 6. its sides being then forced, by the application of sufficient pressure, lbetween the beaded edges 3 of the latter so that the wearing apparel and ribbon is thereby rigidly clamped between the sides of the two members as shown in Figure 2,
and so secured together. When the ma-V terial is secured between the twoclip memioo bers in this manner, the curvature of the member 2 is increased owing to the thickness of the material. The two members of the clip may be readily detached when required, thereby allowing of the ribbon 5 to be removed, when the garment is to be washed.
If desired the end of the ribbon may be -V engaged over the one edge only of the member 1 of the fastener, and the edgev of the camisole or otherA garment engaged over its:
other edge,- so that one thiclmess of maek terial only comes between the opposed edges of the two members. By curling over the edges of the sides of the two members an efficient snap action is obtained, whilst a rounded gripping surface is provided so that the material is not damaged in any way. Y y
The two members of the clip may be of any suitable cross-section provided they are of an open-ended trough formation. The member 2 may, for examplejbe of a V-section having'curledein edges.
The improved clip may also be employed for connecting together other articles ofY jwearing apparel.
Having vfully described my invention,
what I desire to claim and secure `by Letters Patent is A clip for articles of wearing apparel, comprising two sheet metal members of an open-ended channel or trough formation, disposed with their concave or inwardlybent faces towards one another, and having their longitudinal edges curled inwards or formed with an inwardly projecting beading, the edges or sides ofthe one member being Vadapted to be engaged between the edges or sides of the other member, soV as to clip the material between the two members. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
i THOMAS BERRY ALLXTT.
