UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
DAVID S. EMRICK, OF FAYETTE, NEVVYORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER AND DOOR FASTENING-S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,435, dated March 10, 1874; application filed January 20, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, DAVID S. EMRIUK, of Fayette, in the county of Seneca and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fastenin gs and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to door and shutter fastenings; and consists in the construction of a pivoted swinging plate provided with horizontal arms, each terminating in a hook or catch, the plate being formed with rounded shoulders upon its depending part, which force the catches downward when they strike suitable projections on the door or side of the' house, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a door with my fastenin g. Fig. 2 is a view of the fastening inplace, and Fig. 3 is a detached view of the same.
My door-fastenin g is simply a plate, A,which is rounded at its lower end, and provided, at its upper end, with two horizontal arms, B B, extending in opposite directions, and each formed with a catch, 1), on the under side at the end. This plate is passed through a mortise in the door near the outer edge, and pivoted in the same, at its center 1), near the upper edge, the arms B B projecting one on each side of the door.- Suitable projecting metal pieces d d being arranged in the doorframe, as well as on the side wall, the same fastening keeps the door shut and open. The end of one of the arms B strikes one of the projections d, and rises up over the same until the catch 1) has passed the projection. The rounded part or shoulder a of the plate A then strikes the projection 61, turning the plate on its pivot, so as to throw the arm B down, and the hook I) catches on the projection. In the plate A are two holes, a a, for the purpose of hanging a padlock to fasten the door where there is no way to lock with the fastener.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
The pivoted swinging plate A ,provided with horizontal arms B B, each terminating in a hook or catch, 1) b, and formed with rounded shoulders a a upon its depending part, which force the catches downward when they strike suitable projections, all substantially as described and shown, for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of December, 1873. I
D. S. EMRIGK.
