JOHN S. FIFIELD AND FRANK YV. BRANERD, OF VESTERLY, R.
EMPROVEMENT EN SPCN-ENGRAVING CHUCKS.
Specication forming part of Leiters Patent No. MESA E3, dated March 3, 1874; application led May 17, 1813.
To alt 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN S. FIFIELD and FRANK W. BRAINERD, of Vesterly, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Engraving-Chuck, of' which the following is a specification The invention will rst be fully described, and then pointed ont in the claims.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of the chuck as improved by us, showing the manner of holding a ring, the section being taken on the line w :zr of Fi g. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the chuck-case and horizontal section of the jaws on the line y g/ of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a top view, showing the manner of holding a spoon or fork.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding' parts. y
A represents the ordinary hollow vertical chuck-case; O', the long nut, which supports it and works the rod A, to which the jaws B are connected, the said nut being supported in the base F. O is ,the faceplate on the top or" the chuck-case for supporting the work, which is clamped down on it by the jaw-heads H, the said jaws projecting up through the curved slots I in the face-plate.
As above described, the machine is the same as that in common use for holding spoons, forks, and other articles of like form, in the manner represented in Fig. 3.
To adapt the machine for holding rings also, we provide the jaws with the projection J on the heads, and make the radial slots K in the plate, also the short circular slots L near the center, into which the jaws can be readily swung from slots I to bring the heads suili ciently close together to hold rings, and they can be shifted back readily to hold spoons, 85o., and at the center we arrange a little rest, D, on which the ring is to be clamped. The said rest is removable, so that it will not interfere with the holding of the spoons. The screw is elevated sufficiently to cause the jaws to project as much as needed for holding the rings.
As it is desirable that the rings be clamped.
at three points about equidistant from each other, we make the jaws B to curve outward along the parts a., where they bear in the right proportion to cause the jaw-heads to approach each other in the same measure that they are moved toward rest D when clamping the ring, and recede from each other in the same way when raised. j
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The clamping-jaws B, adj ustingscrew A, and slotted plate O, when constructed and combined as and for the purpose described.
2. rlhe rest D, combined with slotted plate G and jaws B, as and for thepurpose specified.
