LATHE TooL; j
Application an August 19, 1921. Serial No. 493,569,:
To all Quiz-omit may concermf a f Beit known that Lhiliinnron M. BA sAM,
a citizen of the United States, residing'in the city o1 New York, borou h ot'B'rooklyn, in
the county of Kings and state of New York,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in. Lathe Tools,.o'f wh chthe following 1s a specification,
The inventionrelates to tool holders adapt- I ed to be mounted on slide-rests of lathes, and
the main object of the invention is to provide a removable 'carrierequipp'ed with a plurality ot' lathetools, adapted to be read ily secured to a slide-rest in place of the usual tool-post and arranged to permit the presentation of either of the tools to the work. i V
Afurther object is to provide means for clamping such tools securely in the carrier, and for maintaining the tools in position for effective service. 7 V v Another object is to provide an automatic stop serving as a gauge by which the presented tool will be located in proper relation. to the work, and supported close to the cutting edge during the cutting operation,
A further important object'is to provide means whereby the tool carrier may be easily and securely clamped to the slide-rest to-present the selected tool properly, such means being additional to such automatic stop, and
another object is to provide meansifor taking 7 up the slack due to wear in the members of such clamping means,
l The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement by which the above and other objects are attained, to be hereinafter described and claimed. 7 o
The accompanying drawings form a part anapproved "form of the invention. I 1' Figure 1 is a' face view of the carrier, equipped with several tools arranged to be presented to the work as require J Figure 2 is a corresponding side elevation. Figure 3 is an elevation of the rear face of the same. i
Figure 4 is a section taken on the line" w-m in Figure 3. V
Figure 5 1s a Figure 3.
Figure 6 is an elevation showing a portion plan view corresponding to of theside'of thecarrier opposite to Figure 2. g
Figure 7 is face of the clamping bolt. Y v.
Figure?) is an elevation of such bolt,
V '65" 11 end view showing the outer Figure 9 is'an'end vie of the bolt, showingthe innerfliace; 1 v H i FigurelO is an end view of one of the tool holders. v
' Figure 11 is a corres o-nding side elevas tron. v
Similar reference numerals indicate the same partsin all the figures. i
Referring to the drawings, the :base
of an angular bracket having a vertical portion 2 and an aperture? for the reception of a heavy bolt, not, shown, by whichthe bracket 'Inay-be secured to the slide-rest of a lathe, notrepresented but which may be of any approvedftype.
The bracket 2 is bored at 4; to receive the it shank 5 of a clamping bolt 6' extending therethrough, and the bracket has a flange 7 located annularly' to the clampingbolt, ex-
tending around'the upperpart of the bracket and terminating at the base l at eachside. The inner face of the flange/7 tapers jinwardly' as at'- 8. I I I Held by the head Qofthe clamping bolt- 6, is'a vertically mounted circular disk lO'having a central opening receiving the main portion of. the'bolt-he ad 9, Which is rebated annularly to receive a corresponding annular shoulder 11 on such head. "The bolt is held against revolving in the bracket 2 by a screw 12 extending through the bracket fromv the rear with} its point engaged-Vin one of the alnnularly'located'recesses l3 bored in the inner face of the head; v p
On the rear face of the disk isla tapered circular'boss 14 matching the flange '7 and surrounded by an annular'groove 15 receiving the lip of the flangeJThe protruding 7 end of the shank 5 is threaded andQis received in'a nut 17 hearing againsttherear faceof the bracket and formed on the end of a lever 18 by which the bolt may bedrawn strongly rearward throwing the lever 18 through as'hortarc. hrown in the. opposite direction the boltis loosened and the disk; '10,'may be rotated on the bolt, and when the lever is thrownin the direction to tighten the bolt, the latter the channel, at 23, froin' the H 20, so that,
the pressure induced drawing head 19'into the tapered socket by the action entatio.n of the tool to the work 1,,
rebate in the disk, draws the boss 1% into i strong frictional contact with the tapered flange 7 andliolds the disk against rotary movement. V P V :The disk 1s provided with a series of tapered sockets each adapted to receive a tool holder in which a tool is mounted-and Each tool holdcifl coi'ii- 7 labor. The lILV Qlltl'OB OfiBl'S the auvanta es presented radially. prises a conical head lghaying' a screw- -threaded shank extending through the disk and equipped Witha nut 21 by which the corneal liea'dImay be drawn into its socket. A; channel 22 extending; dunner 1- cally across theliead 19 receives the col, and
the holder is split or slitted parallel with I Lannel nearly to the-end of the shank the conical ofthe nut'21, contracts the channel and the to'ol'ther'ein is strongly gripped.
In order to hold the. tool holder positively a ainst rotation and insure the pro to the axial line, or the latter, eac
provided with an arm 24%, preitrahly in tegral therewith, proyect n'g laterally there fro-in on one side andf adapted to be acted upon the inner fa'ce' of the head of a screw 25 set radially in a rec'e 26in the periphery of he disk and. so locatedfas to re'ist the tendency of the had to rotate in t disk due, to the action of the tool in making its cut. 'Thescrew 25 also serves as, an adjusting means for pres nting the cutting edge 1 spn 1;
0t thetobl at the desired angle to the v ork. The d sk is shown as equipped with eight holders and carrying" a cutting-on tool 27y a formihgtoolQS, cuties 29, 30 and 31, and knurllng tool32; The numberv of holders may bejariedwand as the holders areinter j changeable in their sockets the: tools maybe located as desired relatively to each other the holders may be shaped to receive tools of any desired type.
7 On the rear face, of the disk 10 the proshanks 20 ofthe tool holders rest succe siyely upon a dog 33 whe'nin position for's'eiwlice and are thu'sdirectly supported. close to the; work while makinga cut. The dog 33 ,is ,pivotally nioiinted onthe base 1 oi" thei b cket and ishheld yieldingly prese tdin the am ofthe'shanks 20 by a A yng beneath a handle 35 by 11c'h the doglm'a'y be retracted out of the path;
iieieiwis is swung to free the I v1O the lattermay bearotated, clockvwlseiinFig'ure, 1 ,to'pieslent either tool to the I Q. the; shank-ends passingrl idly past the amuse desired tool is presented; the shank-end of such 'tool is then engaged by the dog against held in thetlath'e;
a reverse movement and the lever 18 swung the slide-rest as usual and the'fout is made. A succeeding tool is then presented by sirhi lar manipulations, and it the tools 'arcarranged on the disk-in thegorder in which they thus effecting a great saving in time and of a turret reino'vably mounted on/a slide rest. and capable OI" working ye'ry close to the chuck in which the piece tote ti ated is to grip the disk to the bracket. The whole is then fed forward on '70 areto he used, each will 'followtheother When through longiise the clampingbolt 6' audits seats in the disk and bracket bsc-omsworsro adegree requiring a longer throw of the lever 18, to the right in Figure 1 8,-to effect the clamping tha'nf is permitted:
by the base 1 of the bracket, the screw is withdrawn to disengage lil-S'POlIllJ from its recess 13, and the clamp ng; bolt Gturncd backto present a new recess13 andthe screw 1. The lathe tool describech coinprising a o f tapered'sockets therein, a, series of tool holders, each mounted in one of said soci-rets' and hayinga split co'nicalhead rnatchitj therein and an armextending laterally vf om said head, asha-nk on said head erzti through said disk, anut on said. sli'zliitzlar-i rangedto draw said head into said socket to compressand hold a tool carried in said disk rotably mounted and ha ing a series comprising a .7
