GLEINN R. HOFFMAN, OE SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T HOFFMAN MANUFAC- TUBING COMPANY, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
TRANSMISSION BAND.
To all whom it may con 0cm:
Be it known that I, GLENN R. HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transmission Bands; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, .which form a part of this specification. I
My invention relates to transmission bands, and has for its object to provide improved features of construction in the removable ear which will permit of its application and removable to and from the band for facilitating the removal of the transmission band from the transmission for needed repairs or other purposes and its replacement thereon Without interference with the transmission gears, say of the type used in the Ford car or truck. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear the invention consists in the features hereinafter particularly described and then sought to be clearly defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective of the removable ear, detached;
Figure 53 a perspective of a portion of the transmission band;
Figure 15 a central longitudinal section through the ear and portion of the metallic strap or band and its lining.
In the drawing the numeral 1 designates the removable ear of a transmission band, the other ear which is usually permanently attached to one end of the band not being illustrated as it is constructed and applied in the customary manner and therefore iieed not be illustrated. The removable ear illustrated has its shank portion formed with slots 2 which are enlarged at one end and also formed on its under face at the notched end of the ear with a depending shoulder or member 3. The band to which this ear will be detachably secured comprises a 'metallic strap or band 4 having a lining 5- ofwoven fabric or othersuitable material,
and headed studs 6 projecting from the 'band i and designed to be passed through the slots 2 of the ear. The end of the band 4 next to the notched end of the ear is formed with a recess 7 designed to receive the shoulder or member 3 when the ear is in set position on thehand so that when the band is applied to its drum and the two ends are drawn to- Wards each other by usual means employed for the purpose, the end of the metal strap portion 4 will abut against the shoulderror member 3 and longitudinal slipping ofthe ear on the band prevented. To apply [the ear to the band, the ear is positioned so that, the headed studs Will pass through the enlargements of the slots 2 and then the ear is slipped in the direction of the free end of the band so as tobring the headed studs into the narrower portions of the slots and the shoulder or member 3 into the recess 7 of the metal'strap portion 4 of the band, the engagement of the heads of the istuds with the upper face of the shank of the ear tend:
ing to prevent the separation. or spreading apart of the ear and band, and longitudinal slipping of the ear in one direction prevented by engagement of the stu'dswith the end walls of the narrow portions of the slots, and movemept' in the other dire tian prevented by engagement of the shoulder or member 3 with the end of the metal band 4 where it lies in the recess formed therein. To remove the ear the metal strap or band and its lining is depressed next to the notched end of the ear to disengage the band from the shoulderor member 3 and then the ear is slid endwise to bring the heads of the studs into register with the enlargements of the slots 2 when the ear is slipped from attachment to the band. This construction the notched end of the ear with a depending 5 shoulder, and a band provided with a headed stud to fit in the slot of the ear andhavin; its and bearing against the depending shoulder of the ear when the headed stud is in the narrow portion of the slot in the car; no
