c. D. WILKINS COLLAR FASTENER Filed Apm 19.1923
gwwmtw Patented Jan. 15, 192
UNITED STATES CHARLES D. WILKINS, or WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA. i
COLLAR. FASTENER.
Application filed April 19, 1923. Serial No. 633,217.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES D. WILKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a, Collar Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a collar fastener or button and has for its principal object to provide a device which may be easily and quickly attached to a shirt so that a collar may be fastened thereto.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which will eliminate the necessity of providing button holes in the collar and to allow an easy adjustment of the collar to the neck-band.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of the collar button embodying my invention, and
Figure 2 is another elevation thereof showing a portion in section.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the device consists generally of a clamp member A and a button member B. The clamp member A includes an outer U- shaped frame 1 formed of some rigid material and an inner U-shaped frame 2 which is formed of some resilient material preferably metal. Projections 3 are disposed on the inner resilient frame 2 adjacent its terminals on the inner sides thereof. The resilient inner frame 2 is tensioned so as to retain itself within the outer rigid frame 1. A lever 4 is pivoted to one leg of the outer rigid frame 1 and is of angular construction being pivoted intermediate its ends so that one leg 5 thereof may operate through a slot provided at 6 in the leg of the rigid frame 1. When the other arm 7 of the lever b 4 is fulcrumed so as to extend partially into the slot 6 the arm 5 will be disposed at substantial right angles to the leg of the rigid frame 1 thereby bending the adjacent leg of the resilient frame 2 toward the opposite leg and grasping the collar 8.
A bar 10 is attached to the opposite leg of the outer rigid frame 1 and projects at right angles therefrom and the button Bis hinged to the terminal thereof so that the same may be disposed at right angles to the bar as shown in Figure 1 or substantially parallel therewith as shown in Figure 2. This button is for the purpose of engaging the shirt band.
As is disclosed to advantage in Figure 2 the preferred manner of attaching the bar 10 to the leg of the rigid frame 1s to provide the terminal of the bar with a pair of oppositely disposed notches 11 thereby forming a head 12. The narrow portion 13 of the bar 10 is disposed in an aperture provided in the leg of the rigid frame 1 and the head 12 is disposed on the inner side of the leg and the adjacent leg of the resilient frame is tensioned thereagainst.
It will be readily seen that the device may be easily and quickly attached to the neck-band of a shirt by means of the button B and to a collar by means of the clamp member A. The device will also be durable and inexpensive to manufacture so that it can be placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost.
I have, in the present instance, shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, and it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scopeof the invention or sacrificing any of its advanta es.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is l. A fastener of the class described including a clamp member comprising an outer U-shaped rigid frame, an inner U- shaped resilient frame disposed in the outer frame, and means on the outer frame for engaging the inner frame so as to force one of its legs toward the other, a. bar projecting rigidly from one leg of the outer frame, and a button hinged to the terminal of said 2. A fastener of the class described including a clamp member, a bar, and a button, said clamp member comprising an outer rigid frame, an inner resilient frame disposed inthe outer frame and provided with inwardly projecting prongs adjacent its terminals, a. lever 'fulcrumed to one leg of the outer rigid frame for engaging one leg of the inner resilient frame so as to force said leg toward the opposite leg of the resilient frame, said bar being rigidly attached to the opposite leg of the rigid frame,
and said button being hinged to the terminal of said bar.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
