UNITED STATES 1,480,570 PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. SGHODER AND MAX A. TROEGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS TO AMERICAN LITHOGRAPHIC COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
DISPLAY CARTON.
Application filed September 22, 1921. Serial No. 502,329.
To all 10720122. it may concern.
Be it known that we, CHARLES E. SoHoonR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofNew York, borough of Bronx, in the count of Bronx and State of New York, and l AX A. Tnoncnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Cartons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to display cartons and has for its object to provide an article of the class specified, simple in construction, efficient as a packing case and pleasing in appearance when erected in display position.
vVith these ends in view our improved article comprises features illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the drawing accompanying this specification, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carton embodying our improvements, the cover of the carton being opened up from the body thereof. Fig. 2 is a similar perspective view, with the cover projecting below one end of the body, and said cover and body locked in display position. Fig. 3 is a lengthwise mid-section of the carton in erected position. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view similar to a portion of Fig. 1, showing a modified form of a portion of our improvements. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view similar to that of Fig, l, showing a further modification of a portion of our improvements. All the figures of the drawing are to one scale.
Said carton is preferably folded from a unitary blank, and the forward corners 2, 3 of the body 4 and the similar corners 5, 6 of cover 7 may be joined in some convenient known manner, not shown. The rear ends of body sides 8, 9, are provided with inreaching ears 10, 11 preferably of equal width with said sides, respectively, and of a length equal to the height of the cover, thus using all the stock of the edge portions of the blank from the rear edge of the body to the forward '(or lower) edge of the cover. These ears are efficient, when positioned as shown in Fig. 1, for assisting'in retaining within the body any merchandise packed in said body, and, when positioned as shown in Figs, 2 and 3, are efiicient for holding the cover in display position relatively to said body. To this latter endsaid ears are prov1ded with transverse angularly disposed score- lines 12, 13, respectively, thereacross for punoosesdescribed later herein. Also body sides 8, 9 are severed from bottom 4 by slots 16, 17, at those ends thereof adacent ears 10, 11, respectively, a distance equal to about two-thirds the width of either cover side 14, or 15. Rear wall 18 of cover 7 is hingedly connected to the rear edge 19 of the bottom of body 1 and to the topof cover 7 and that cover rear wall is unattached at its ends from the ends 14 15 of sidewalls 14, 15 of the cover, so that said wall 18 may be folded along both its long edges relatively to the body bottom and.
cover top. 4
(lover side- walls 14, 15 are provided with slots 20, 21 therethrough, respectively, located preferably close to and parallel with the cover top and beginning at a distance from rear wall 18 slightly greaterthanthe width of one of the cover sides, as 14 Also near the lower (or front) edge of each cover side, as 14, and opposite the slots, as 20, small tabs, as 22', are formed for purposes described later herein. In erecting our improved carton in display position, ears 10, 11 of the body sides are opened out, cover wall 18 is folded into the cover and cover side- walls 14, 15 are pushed forwardly between ears 10, 11 and into slots 16, 17, respectively, of body 4, whereby ends 14:, 15 of the cover sidewalls are thrust downwardly below the rear end ofsaid body, thusproviding a foot for the elevation of that rear end of the body 4. Then those portions of ears 10, 11 extend ing beyond creases 12, 13 therein, are inserted in slots 20, 21 of the cover, respectively, thus locking cover 7 in erect position. For added security of ears 10, 11 in slots 20, 21, tabs 22 may be sprung outwardly to overlap the upper edges of said ears, respectively.
In the modification of Fig. 4, the slots as 21*, corresponding with the slots 20, 21 of Fig. 1, are shifted toabout midway widthwise, side- walls 14, 15, respectively, and inclined to the long edges of said side-walls. For engagement therewith, ears 10, 11 of Fig. 1 may be'shortened as at 11 Fig.4 and inserted in slot 21 up to cover fold 9.
In the modificationof Fig. 5, to obviate the need of slots 16, 17, cars, as 10,.may be assembled inside, thecover side-Walls, as 14, the end of said ear being pushed outwardly through cover slot and folded against the outer face of cover '1.
\Ve claim:
