UNITED STATES JOSEPH B. GLAZIER, OF VVORGESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLASTERERS HAWKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
148,046, dated March 3, 1874; applicaiion filed August 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPrI B. GLAZIER, of Vorcester, Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Handle for Masons Hawks and Derby Floats, of which the following is a specifica-tion:
The object of my invention is sufficiently set forth in the following specification; and it consists in the peculiar constructionand mode of attaching the handle of a masons hawk or derby float, so that the same can be applied by any mason, and also in such a manner as to securely hold the hawk from turning inde pendently of the handle. It is shown in side elevation in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing, in which the lower portion of the handle is shown in section. Fig. 2 shows a top view of the bolt-head O.
In Fig. 1, A represents the body of the handle, which is a straight cylindrical piece of wood, having a longitudinal hole to admit the bolt D 1'). B B show the position of the board forming the top of the hawk or derby float, represented by dotted lines. 0 is the head of the bolt D D, which is made in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the star-points having sharp beveled edges on the under side, as seen at a a, Fig. 1. E E are two projecting points upon the upper end of the handle, which enter the wood of the board B B, and tend to prevent the same from turning upon the bolt D independently of the handle A. F is a thin metallic washer, placed between the G is a small tubular nut, having a thread, by which it may be screwed upon the end of the bolt D. The nut G has a thin circular head or shield,
I, which covers the entire end of the handle,
sufficient force to turn the nut G upon the end of the bolt D.
The mode of constructing a hawk or derby float with my improved handle is as follows: A board, B B, of the requisite shape and size is selected, and, after indenting the upper surface with an ordinary'knife to receive the head C of the bolt, and passing the bolt D through the board and handle, as shown in the drawing, the nut G is screwed upon the end of the bolt D by turning the lower section of the handle J, the washer F allowing the section J to turn upon the section A without too much friction.
I claim as my invention- An improved hawk and derby float handle, made in two sections, Aand J, with the nut Gr, shielding-head I, bolt D, andthe points E E and H H, or their equivalents, all constructed in the manner described, and for the purposes set forth.
