Description

Jan. 8 19.24,
- w. H. ORTMAN GLOTHESLINE. SUPPORT Filed July l. 1921 INVENTOR. s/Wiliam H zf'zfmn A TTORNEY Patented Jan. 8, 1924.
UNITED STATES j maant WILLIAM H. ORTMAN, 0F MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
cLorHEsLrNn surron'r.
Application led July 1,
T 0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. OR'rMAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of 'Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothesline Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to improvementsv in supports for clothes lines and similar ropes or cables, and relates more particularly to that class of supports describedin Patent Number 1,327,059 granted to me in the United States on the 6th day of January 1920.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby a clothes line may be quickly and securely strung from a plurality of posts and connected to anyone of the latter depending upon the amount of rope required and the number of objects carried thereby.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a device of the character described which may be cheaply and easily produced from a single piece of material; which is capable of effecting the desired securement of the clothes line, expeditiously; which includes means to prevent fraying and breakage of the line due to chafing against the metal of which the device is formed, and which is thoroughly reliable and efficient in use. f
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly de fined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the different views:-
Figure 1 is a perspective of a preferred form of my improved support, showing in dotted lines the manner of effecting securement of the end of a line therewith.
Figure 2, a partial longitudinal section through the device on the line 2 2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3, a plan view of a slightly modified form of the support.
Figure 4 is a modified form of the device showing the same provided with two lateral extensions.
1921. serial No. 481,822.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will bel observed that both forms of my invention are produced from a single piece of sheet material, with particular reference to the form illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, it
will be noted that it includes a flat body portion 10 having extending from one end thereof, an elongated' shank 11, which is approximately one-half the width of the body portion 10 and which is doubled upon itself so that its freel end overlies the adjacent flat face of the body portion. The free end of said portion is in turn bent to provide a hook 12 the open portion of which faces inthe direction of the outer end of the shank hereinbefore mentioned.
In order to secure the two thicknesses or plies of metal together which constitute the shank, 11, so that said shank will at'all times be maintained rigid, a U-shaped incision is cut in one of thelplies andthe tongue. 13 formed thereby is passed through a slot, formed in the other ply after which it is bent over against the outer face of said second ply, thus forming a simple and eliicient manner of accomplishing the purpose,
A part 14 of the body portion 10 projects laterally with respect to the shank 11, the same being connected with the body portion proper by a relatively narrow neck 15 formed by cutting depressions 16 in the respective ends of the body portion. These depressions are essential to the device I have produced, and, as shown, the edges of the metal forming their inner rounded ends is swaged over to produce beads 17 which taper outwardly from the inner ends of the depressions and merge into the edges of the metal formingl the sides thereof.
In connection with the hook 12 it will be noted that the bight portion thereof is disposed inwardly with respect to the outer depression 16, and that it is slightly curved transversely at its bight portion in order to more readily accommodate that portion of the line which is adapted to be engaged therewith.
As shown in Figure 1 the shank 11 is provided with an opening 18 adjacent its end, the same being adapted vto receive therein the bight portion of a supporting hook or member 19, the latter being securely fastened to suitable posts or the like.
In the operation of my improved device, assuming that a plurality of posts have each attached thereto one of my improved supports, and .it is desired vto streteh a line between two or more4 0f the said posts. The free ends of the line are attached to a pair of thev supports and each end being secured thereto in a mannersirni-lar to that illus-l trated in Figure 1, and if desired, any in: termediate portion of the samem'ay be supported by similar devices the 'latter instanoe, the line inerely'engages the hook 12. If desired a second lateral extension, in all respects duplicate of the extension hereinbefore ldescribed may be provided on the body portion, and if this second extension is used as illustrated in dottedlines in Figure 1 of the dravv'i'ngssecurernent of; the line with either r both` extensions may be effected in a niannerwhich is obvious. In Figure dof the drawings isy illustrated f1 dvcepharillg the. 'relative arrangeinent of depressions l5 with hook 12- l*as is 'the ferm, 0f theA` device ,fir-,St described but differing Slightly from said first form in thaty thevshan'l;l 1 1 isnot dtnibledl back upon itself andiifn that the, hook 12 is formed by bending' @verv a rar-.t 0.15 tlfieibofy'rerion F rom theforegoing, it is thought that the CQHStrutiQn, Operation and many advantages-vif the', herein described. invention Will @apparent to those skilled inthe art; without further description, and it, Will be understoodthat various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor: details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from thespirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, What'I claim asv new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. A device of the class described formed of a singlegpieee of material and cut to pro vide a shank, an extension arranged at one end of said shank, and having its opposite end portions bifurcated, a hook carried by the shank and formed adjacent said eXtension, and said furcations and hook adapted to receive therein the end of a clothes line.
2. A devieeof the class described formed of a s ingle piece of Ina-ferial and cut to provide a shank, an extension carriedv by one end of said shan-k, furcations formed between saidy shank and extension, said shank being folded; back upon itself and provided atiis free end with a hook, an opening in said folded por-tion ofl they shank, a tongue cut fromy the under portion and passing through said Opening for locking the tWof portions together, and said hook and `furcationsV adapted to reoefivetherein the-end 0f a clothes line. l
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto Setmv hand at thecounty ofv Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
WILLIAM H. oRTMAN.
