' C. HAARBERG PORTABLE HANDLE Filed Aug. 31. 1922 WITNESSES IN l/EN 70/? ff CuZoJf arZaer ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 1, 1924.
NITED STATES CATO HAARBERG, OF FOX LAKE. ILLINOIS.
PORTABLE HANDLE.
Application filed August 31, 1922. Serial No. 585,526.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CATO HAARBERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fox Lake, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Portable Handle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to tongs,
1o grapples, and the like, and it pertains particularly to portable handles adapted for use in connection with lifting articles such for example as boxes and the like.
It is the primary object of the invention to provide a portable handle which may be used in connection with either open or closed boxes.
It is a further object of the invention to construct the device so that the strain oocasioned by the lifting of the box will cause the handle to more'firmly grip the same.
WVith the above and other objects in view,
reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a detail sectional view of an open box showing the manner in which the portable handle is used in connection therewith;
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the handle;
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of a closed box showing the manner of using the handle in connection therewith.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises a substantially U-shaped member 11, one of the legs 12 of which is longer than the other leg 13. The longer leg 12 is provided with an angularly projecting portion 14, which terminates in a substantially right-angular hook member 15, the extremity of which is provided with a piercing point 16. The longer leg 12 is provided with a suitable opening and pivotally mounted therein by means of a rivet 17, is a pair of gripping jaws 18. Each of these gripping jaws is provided with an angular projection 19, and the extremity of each angular projection is provided with a piercing point 20, and in addition to these piercing points, each of the projections 19 is provided in the rear of the piercing points 20 with a piercing or biting point 25. The gripping jaws 18 are provided with a handle member 21, by means of which the device is grasped during the operation thereof.
When the device is used in connection with an open box the U-shaped member 11 is positioned in such a manner that it embraces the open end of the box. As the handle 21 is grasped the gripping jaws 18 are rocked about their pivotal point until the biting or piercing points 25 engage the outer face of the box. Upon an upward lift being exerted upon the handle member 21, the biting or piercing point 25 will be caused to engage the outer face of the box and prevent accidental displacement of the device with respect thereto.
When the device is used in connection with a closed box, the piercing points 16 of the U-shaped member 11 are engaged with one side of the box and the piercing points 20 of the gripping jaws 18 are engaged with the top of the box. Upon an upward strain being exerted upon the handle member 21, the biting points 16 of the U-shaped member 11 will be caused to bite into the side wall of the box and the biting points 20 of the gripping jaws 18 will be caused to bite into the top wall of the box. In this manner a firm grip is had upon the box and the same may be securely gripped and a lifting strain may be applied to the handle mem ber 21.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the present invention provides a portable handle for boxes which may be used in connection with boxes of either the open or closed type, and that the construction of the device provides for a firm and secure gripping of the box therewith.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a U-shaped member, one of the legs of which is provided with an angular extension, a piercing point formed on the extremity of said angular extension, gripping jaws pivotally connected to the U-shaped member, a biting edge formed on each of said gripping jaws, and means for rocking the gripping jaws about their pivotal point to cause their biting edges to engage an article, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A portable handle comprising a substantially U-shaped member, a plurality of gripping jaws pivotally secured thereto, and means for rocking said gripping jaws about their pivotal point for engagement of both the U-shaped member and the gripping jaws with an article to which they are adapted to be attached.
CATO HAARBERG.
