UNITED STATES ,TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, on s'rarlrronn, CONNECTICUT; v I
JOHN B. FREYSINGER, or STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, assreivon' ro THE YALE-a;
FACING-RING STRUCTURE FOR CYLINDER LOCKS."
Application filed October 30, 1922. Serial Noi597,93 7.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN B. FRnYsINGnR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Facing- Ring Structures for Cylinder Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,.
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in facing or rose ring construction for cylinder locks, and more particularly to such as provide means for effecting a proper close connection with the flanged or headed end of the lock cylinder and between the same and the outer face of the door to which the lock is applied, when the cylinder is so positioned in the door that the plug member of the lock is disposed in the lower part of the cylinder.
One object of my present invention is to provide a simple and eflicient structure of the class mentioned, which shall also provide re-inforoement and armor to protect the lock cylinder against penetration of a boring tool.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a front view of a facing ring or rose structure embodying my improvements.
Iiigure 2 is a sectional view of the same, an V Figure 3 is a sectional View illustrating a modified construction.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in Figures 1 and 2, the facing ring (which may be designated as a whole by the reference character 1) comprises two rings, 2, 3, preferably of steel or of hardened metal, one of said rings being disposed parallel with the other and the internal diameter of the inner ring member 2 which is disposed approximately against the outerface of the door, is substantially the same as the external diameter of a lock cylinder 4, as indicated in Figure 2. The internal diameter of the outer ring member 3 is slightly greater than the external diameter of the or headed end 5 of the lock cylinder. An annulus 7 of spring metal is disposed within the ring member 3 and lies against the outer face 6 of said ring member 3. The annulus 7 projects inwardly beyond the inner wall 7 a of the ring member 3 and is split in such manner as to provide a plurality of spring fingers 8 which bear against the rear face of the flange or head 5 of the lock cylinder and serve to insure a proper connection between the head of the lock cylinder and the facing ring in the event that said flange or head will not find a seat within the rin when the cylinder lock is properly adjusted to dispose its plug member at the lower part of. the cylinder.
The two members 2 and 3 which compose the facing ring 1 may be covered and held together by a thin scalp 9 of metal other than that of which said ring members may be composed. The rear edge of the scalp 9 may be bent over the peripheral edge of the ring member 2 and the forward portion of said scalp may form a lining 10 for the wall of the ring member 3 and serve to prevent displacement of the spring annulus 7, as indicated in Figure 2.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in Figure 3, the body of the facing ring consists of a single ring member 11 which is recessed for the accommodation of the spring annulus 7 and the latter is held in place by a small ring 12 located in said recess and enclosed by the scalp 9.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: 1
1. The combination in a facing ring structure, of a facing ring comprising a body portion made solid throughout and having an interior recess, an annulus of spring metal mounted and confined in said ring, and a plurality of spring fingers projecting from said annulus within the facing ring for engagement by the headed end of a cylinder lock.
2. The combination of a facing ring having its body made of hard metal solid throughout and having a recess, a spring annulus carried in the recess of said ring, and a plurality of spring fingers, projecting forwardly from said annulus within said facing ring.
3. In a facing ring structure, the combination of two ring members, one having a part greater in internal diameter than that of the other ring'in em'ber, an annulus of spring metal located within one of said ring memer endrorid d h s r n n er p jecting rwardly-1 and; a me a se r mg and uniting said ring members.
4. The combination of am facing ring, a spring annulus within said ring and having forwardly projecting spring fingers, and a alp we. id. ri and having n. wa d remeee projecting pert preventing, displacement of said spring annulus. i r
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN B. FREYSINGER;
Witnesses:
STANLEY C. WHITNEY, Tnos. F. RICHARDSON.
