E. G. MATTHEW8.,
Extension-Tables.
No.147,955. PatentedFeb.24. 1874,
WITNESSES [NVENTOR By @a ATTORNEY ELBRIDGE G. MATTHEWS, OF OAKHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION-TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,955,
dated February 24, 1874; application filed January 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELBRIDGE G. 1\IAT- THEWs', of Oakham, in the county of NVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have i11- vented a new and valuable Improvement in Extension-Tables and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my extension-table. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
This invention has relation to extension-tables; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of certain parts, as will be hereinafter explained.
The following is a description. of my improvements:
The tabletop shown in the annexed drawings consists of two rigid end sections, D D, and an intermediate section, D which latter is composed of narrow transverse strips d, glued or otherwise secured upon a flexible sheet of canvas, or other suitable material. This folding section D is secured by one end to the straight end of the longest rigid top section 1), so as to move with it when the table is extended or shortened. The top section D is se cured upon the supporting-frame A, and the top section D is secured upon the supportingframc B. The side rails of the frame A have long dovetail tenons a a on their outer sides, which are received by corresponding grooves,
a made into the side rails of the frame B. This construction of the two supporting-frames unites them, and at the same time allows them to be extended and contracted without detachment. The frameB has side win gs or flanges G 0 formed on or secured to its side rails, through which slots b are made longitudinally, for receivin g through them the handles b of two slides, I). These slides are adjustable longitudinally, and are intended for supporting the folding section D when the same is wholly or partly drawn out of its concave receiver E. G designates a winch-drum, having its end bearings in the side rails of the supporting-frame B, and carryin g on one end a crank, h, for turning it. Around this drum G a rope, g, is wound, one end of which is secured to a transverse connecting-piece, A, of frame A,'and the other end is secured to a transverse piece of the same frame.
By turning the winch G, and winding upon it one portion of the rope g, the supportingframes A B will be extended, and with them the table top; and by reversing the winch G, the parts A B D D D will be shortened, and the folding portion of the top will berolled up in the receiver E. When the tabletop is extended, the folding portion 1) will be supported partly by the frame B, and partly by the slides b.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an extension table, the combination of the slotted flanges G O on the side rails B, and
the slides I) provided with handles I), with the folding section D substantially as shown, and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ELBRIDGE e. MATTHEWS.
