MONTGOMERY C. TOWNLEY, OF JACKSON,MICHIGAN; THE PEOPLE S NATIONAL BANK EXECUTOR SAID MONTGOMERY C. TOWNLEY, DECEASED.
POST AND POLE PROTECTOR.
Application filed December 26, 1922. Serial No; 608,926.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MONTGOMERY (1.. TOWNLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Jackson, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post and Pole Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in post and pole protectors.
The main object of the invention is to provide an improved protector for fence posts, telegraph and telephone poles and the like which may be readily applied and adjusted to a pole or post.
A further object is to provide an improved protector having these advantages which effectively excludes moisture and thereby protects the portion of thepost or pole which is set into or adjacent the ground.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detail description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiinent of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a fragmentary side elevation of my improved-protector applied to a post or pole. I
Fig. II is a horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. I.
Fig. III is a horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. I.
Fig. IV is an enlarged detail on a line corresponding to line 1- 1 of Fig. I.
Fig. V is a detail side elevation of a slightly modified form of my invention.
Fig. VI is a horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 66 of Fig. V.
In the drawing similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the pole or post to which my improved protector is applied. The casing 2 is formed of sheet metal and is wrapped around the pole or post with its edges overlapping as illustrated.
I attach a joint strip 3 adjacent one longitudinal edge of the protector, this joint strip being offset and spaced from the easing to receive the opposite edge, that is, it provides a longitudinal recess intowhich the coacting edge telescopes, the object of the overlapping strip being to close the joint for excluding water and holding the overlapping edge in close contact with the inner edge.
I provide clamping bands 4: and 5, the top band 5 having an inturned edge 6 engaging the peripheral groove 7 above the casing. This top band is provided with overlapping ends and a joint piece 8 providing a telescoping closed joint for the ends of theband. The band has projecting studs 9 adjacent its ends over which the clamping wire 10 is engaged, thereby clamping the top band to the casing and post. The bands 4 have securing tongues 11. The bands 4: and 5 are preferably secured tothe casing as an assembled part thereof prior to mounting upon a post by means of the rivets 4: which are disposed adjacent one end of the band.
In the modification shown in Figs. V and VI the wire clips 12 are employed and the bands are provided with the telescopin joint features of the casing and top ban that is, the band 13 is provided with a joint piece 14 which overlaps the outer telescoping end as shown in Fig. V, thereby providing a closed joint for the ends of the band.
My improved post protector is capable of adjustment to posts varying considerably'in size and of varying taper. It is, of course, understood that the protectors are made of various sizes as it would result in a waste of material to make one size adjustable for a great range of sizes. However, it will be appreciated that posts and poles vary greatly in size and shape.
My improved casing is practical to use on posts and one size of my improved post protector is practically used on posts and poles of varying sizes and shape and diameter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a post protector, the combination of a sheet metal casing adapted to be wrapped around a post with its edges overlapplng and having a joint strip secured adjacent one edge to overlap the outer of the overlapping edges of the casing, clamping bands riveted to said casing to embrace the same, one of said clamping bands being positioned to extend above the top of the casing and having an inwardly projecting flange at its upper edge adapted to engage the post thereby providing a cap for the casing, said top band having overlapping ends and being provided with a joint piece secured adjacent one end to overlap the outer of the overlapping ends of said top band, and connecting means for the ends of said bands Whereby the casing may be clamped upon a post.
2. In a post protector, the combination of a sheet metal casing adapted to be wrapped around a post with its edges overlapping and free for telescoping adjustment, clamping bands for said casing, one of said clamping bands being positioned to extend above the top of the casing and having an inwardly projecting flange at its upper edge adapted toengage the post thereby providing a cap for the casing, and connecting means for the ends of said bands whereby clamping stress may be applied thereto to clamp the casing upon the post.
3. In a post protector, the combination of a sheet metal casing adapted to be wrapped around a post with its edges overlapping and having a joint strip secured adjacent one edge to overlap the outer of the overlapping edges of the casing, and a clamping band positioned to extend above the top of the casing and having an inwardly projecting flange at its upper edge adapted to engage the post thereby providing a cap for the easing, said band having overlapping ends and being provided with a joint piece secured adjacent one end to overlap the outer of the overlapping ends of said top band.
4. In a post protector, the combination with a post, of a sheet metal casing wrapped around said post and having a joint strip secured in spaced relation to one'edge with which theother edge telescopes, and clampsecured adjacent one end with which the other end telescopes.
5. In a post protector, the combination with apost, of asheet'metal casing Wrapped around said post With its edges in overlapping relation and free for sliding adjust- -ment,'cla1nping bands'embracing the-casing, one of said clamping'bands having'an inwardly projecting flange at its upper edge engaging the post'above'the casingproviding a cap therefor, and'means for applying clamping stress to said band whereby the band having the inturned invvardlyprojecting flange is clamped with its flange against the post. 7
6. In a .post protector, the combination with a post, of a sheet metal casing Wrapped around saidpost, a clamping band embracing the casing, andhaving an inwardly projecting flange at its upper edge engaging the post above the casing: providing-acaptheretor, said'band having a joint iece secured adjacent one end with which t e other-end telescopes, and means for applyingclamping stress to said band whereby-the edge of its flange is engaged With the post under clamping stress.
7. In a post "protector, the combination with a post, of a sheet metal casing Wrapped around sai'd post,a clamping bandem-bracing the casing, and having an inwardly projecting flange at its upper edge engaging the .post above the casingproviding a cap therefor, and means for applying clamping stress to said band whereby'the edge of its flange is engaged with the post underclamping stress.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
